Full Version: Intercoolers?

I'm in the beginning steps of redoing my car. I have a boxster 6 speed and adapter plate(s)and flywheel and flex plate.. I was considering a built ls1, but now I'm leaning towards a turbo 4.8.

I know that there are probably not a lot of turbo 914's out there, but the ones that are, where did those guys mount their intercoolers?

I don't really want to do the water to air thing.

If I decide to do twins, I thought about scoops on the quarter panels, and one small intercooler on each side.

Or If I do a single turbo, 1 large intercooler in the rear trunk with a hole cut into the lid, then another hole out of the rear of the car between the tail lights.

But I'm looking for ideas/ inspiration.

I run air to water with a heat exchanger in the drivers quarter panel. But... here's Marty's car...

Air to water intercooler w a second rad up front. Constant flow bosh pump, 3/4 in hose.

My current intercooler is in the engine bay. Which means it has to be small and its not getting cold air. My next intercooler will be water to air. It's the only setup that makes sense to me.

I like water to air intercoolers, but my issues is strange. This car had a serious electrolysis problem. I just don't want to get a water to air cooler and have it leak and destroy my engine. Solved the electrolysis problem but it still worries me.

I guess being that it is separate from the cars cooling system probably would make it a none issue, but still a scary thought.

My water to air system is a closed loop with pump and heat exchanger. It does not connect in any way to the engine cooling system.

Black tank and blue fitting are part of the system. Pump is at the lowest point of the system.

Yes. Separate systems for optimum performance. aktion035.gif

Wow, lots of cool stuff. Here's the original location of my air-air intercooler, neat and clean.

Not enough air flow there so changed to water-air. Here's the engine side:

And up in front of the radiator:

Also using the always-on Bosch pump and 3/4" heater hose underneath to the front. Works just like it should.

Your going to need a decent sized IC. The only way to do that is either run air/water or mount it like Marty's.

What are your intake temps at the throttle body?

Mike, speaking for the MSDS car; intake temps measured at the TB usually 10° to 15° warmer than ambient outside temp.
In my water/meth injection days when the liquid tank ran out, I could see 250° at the TB sad.gif

Dont know other than they are much cooler (warm) after ic than (hot) before ic

My fans pull air through it really good, and the air scoop in the spoiler helps get the outside air to it.
