Full Version: factory GT bracing in the passenger footwell?

I had the pleasure of going to Amelia Island this year and have a ton of pics of the cars that were there. They cycle through my desktop backgrounds. Anyway, today this shot rolled by and I noticed the additional box section along the floor in passenger footwell.

This particular picture is of #2 which was part of the 1-2-3 nurburgring finish

Anyway, just curious if the GT experts knew what this was about, was this added to strengthen the chassis?

and another of the "pickup truck" (I actually hate the truck, it accentuates the lines of our cars in a bad way, imo, though those seats are pretty nice!)

I mounted my fuelpump in that exact spot, maybe that's what they were doing too ...

Notice the cigarette lighter in the #1 pic. !

I heard the drivers would smoke during the long straightaways at LeMans, they were so bored running flat out getting lapped by the 917s.

Those are two separate cars. The Le Mans car was sponsored by Sonauto (mostly white paint scheme) and is owned by a private party in Southern California now. The VIN is 9140431020. The Nurburgring (Marathon de la Route) car is orange, and the VIN is 9140432542. I think it is still owned by the Collier Collection?

Thanks Dave, you're absolutely right. I make no claims to be an expert on the GT's. I misread the placard in front of the car at Amelia. I didn't catch that the first several sentences were about 914's in general. I updated the original post for correctness.

the morning sun was reflecting off the signs so I had to purposely put my shadow on them to get the text! note that the bumper is painted black (and chipped) but the red is like a bedliner.

The second car with the Sebring placard on the dash. That's not bracing, its where the bulkhead was modified to squeeze an oil tank in behind the sway bar.

Its very effective since you do not have a high spot in the line flow to hump oil over.

Many race 914s built by enthusiasts would have a roll bar brace forward bolting into the floor. This was less than ideal for two reasons: the floor isn't strong enough not to compromise in a roll over, second, the floor doesn't adequately brace the chassis.

My old gray 914 AX car had its forward brace into the long. During a hard corner sometimes I would hold onto it. I swear I could feel it tense up and lighten back in a straight and suspension wise, that car was dialed in.

Otherwise, I know nothing.
