Are the trailing arm hex nuts lock-nuts or just regular M14x1.5? The ones I took off my car appear to be lock-nuts but I do not know if they are original.

Interesting. I had thought they were lock-nuts as well, but the PET just says that they are nuts.

The originals were unusual.
They were certainly not a standard featureless nut.
They has a contact surface on one end and a slot cut toward the threads on the other end.
They are a locking nut in that they will not just spin down a threaded shaft without
resistance.
They require effort to thread onto the pivot shaft from about 1/2 depth on.

Yes, they are a bit odd. As new ones are NLA, what are people using?

I see AA sells a "repro" but don't know if that is just a standard M14x1.5 hex nut?

I assume they can be reused, my old ones simply look crappy.

I used the old ones. They are fine, Bruce re-plated them and they stay put.

I do have replated originals. I cant see why a Ny-loc would not work too.

Is there only a washer (rather heavy duty one) on the one side?

I'm not sure about the Nylon. Nylon deforms pretty easily, especially in a warm environment.

To the OP, I'd just reuse the original. Actually, let me rephrase that. I'd use sme of Bruce's replated originals

I just did this and used these BMW nuts. they are all steel flanged locking nuts. I like the extra surface the flange has.

I have never found a washer installed as shown on PET for the trailing arms. athe BMW nuts look like they will work but are not a locking type nut . I would you blue lock tite on them.

Ahh. I do have Bruce's awesome rebuilt pedal set. Guess it's time to order the nuts from him as well.

When you guys say no washer. Does that apply to both sides of the pivot shaft? On the diagram it looks like one side only?

The challenge when pulling old stuff apart is that one does not know if it was worked on prior. Thus, there are sometimes conflicts between what you see on the car and what the diagram shows.

I have washers on both inner mounts on my car.I just took the nuts off yesterday to check for wallowed out hole in the ear. Mine is a '74.
What difference would the washers make Bruce?

Just took a closer look at my 914. Looks like there were indeed inner washers on there. One is still sitting there and was pressed on in such a way that it looked like part of the inner assembly. The other one must have come off when I removed the trailing arms. (That also explains why I seemed to be short one washer).

Can't be sure but with just over 40k miles on my 914, I think it was original that way.

IIRC the pivot shaft has serrations on it to prevent it from turning so you wouldn't put a washer there......is that what you were asking? My take on the BMW nuts is that they're deformed to lock them but that may result in screwing up the threads on the pivot shaft during removal---wouldn't use them myself....

I have a nylock one from my needle bearing install, Never had it loosten up on me at all. The stock one did all the time due to the poly bushings that were not installed correctly.
