Hi my Name is Keith Turk, I’ve recently acquired 2 914’s, the first is a $500 project car for my 15yr old grandson Kristian, and the second because I liked the idea so much for myself, a nice enough car bought off Tucson’s Craig’s list from a lying scoundrel

The first has been flared in the back and doesn’t run, ( I need a 1.8 engine for it ) and the second is a running ratty car with Zero rust.

Having done the rust thing in the past... I wanted one from the Southwest .... it’s Very nice but incredibly rough. Especially anything that can fade or weather harden from the sun. ( I like the NO RUST part enough to love the patina.).

I’ll try and post a couple of pictures up....what’s the best way to do that here? I’ve got an I Cloud account but have never posted from it.

Thanks in advance
Keith

( I’m also a bit of a Land Speed Racer if we have any of those guys here )

Why do you call the Tucson seller a lying scoundrel? Buyer beware.

There is no such thing as a zero rust 914. It's there, you just haven't found it yet ...

Well the scum sucking scallywag advertised it as a factory air car and it’s got someone’s aftermarket air. He failed to mention several faults like the doors didn’t open requiring him to transport it in the rain with the windows down. At some point the top
Was broken to access the interior door handles. Mostly just a sorry discription of a pretty nice car. The fella simply could have practiced a modicum of intgrity

True story. The car was sold new in Tucson and I bought it there. I’m slightly more then mechanically adept, (20 plus records over 200mph at seven different venues including bonneville and el mirage ). So long as we don’t judge spelling or grammar I get by mostly

Was there such a thing as a factory air car?

Dang, sorry you had this experience. There are always some losers out there trying to sell their warez with no sense of morality. Good news is, you are in a good group here and you'll have the help to make the best of it.

There was no such thing as a “Factory Air” on any 914. They were all aftermarket AC units installed by the dealer. Some dealers did nice work. Some didn’t.

Thanks for the welcome Rand. I’ve long been a proponent of buying toys that have a good following. The 914 guys I’ve known over the years have been level headed and not snooty like vette folks or jag people, so I’m betting I’ll find a ton of great folks here.

The dude that sold me the car was just practicing his asshatery. I don’t hate him I just wish he’d been more honest.

Simply shows an impulse/emotional purchase and a significant lack of due diligence on my part. The unit isn’t all that bad but my grandmother coulda told you it wasn’t factory. (And she’s been dead for years ) my issue was he called it “factory air” and in my uneducated opinion that was worth something. All of that pales in comparison to it being a documented Arizona car

There was no 'factory air,' the AC was a dealer installed option and most of them don't (or didn't) work very well. Most AC got taken out and thrown away. The big hole in the front trunk got welded up, and you went on your merry way.

Some here have got air systems that work, but I've never seen one in real time.

Actually, that is only true on the west coast...

Here in Texas, there are lots of 914s with AC. And if properly upgraded, they work fine.

Welcome, Keith. I've got a parts car with a 1.8 in it. I have no idea if it works, but you are welcome to it if you need it.

Kristians car has the centerline wheels and I’m not sure where to find the paint code but the car was originally BRG, Mine was silver from the factory and it was simply scuffed to repaint it. The trunk and boot both have factory paint as well as the engine compartment.

I’ve been toying with taking it back to silver, I’ve also been thinking I’m going to simply drive it as is for a while. The car runs fine , it’s got a hot start issue that has nothing to do with Porsche and everything to do with the mechanical hackery that was the DSPO

Mine also seems to have a ton of miles on it. ( I don’t mind )

You've already got it figgered, drive the car with AC dry.gif while you and your grandson work on the red car. Nice flares, btw. This will keep one going, which will provide plenty of impetus to get the other done. Then, having worked your way around the car, the second should have a much steeper learning curve.

Good luck, enjoy the fun!

Welcome from Milwaukee Wisconsin. You should remove the door sills and check for rust on the "longitudinals". Basically the frame of the car from front to back. I did NOT do that and when I found the doors sagged there is rust. It can be fixed if caught early. I have only owned my 1.7L for a couple months. I found this site to be one of the best I have ever visited. (I have had 944-S (non-turbo) a 928 and Merkur XR4Ti so I have done a lot of surfing.). The people are great, the info is top notch and if you make a mistake (like not checking the longs) they will spank you!

It would take a lot of work to make a 914 into a Bonneville car but they come pretty well equipped for Autocross and fun on twisty roads.

That is awesome to be doing something like this with your grandson! Enjoy it and teach/ learn together. What an awesome opportunity (I might be a tad jealous). Stories like this will help to keep younger folks involved in cars and off the damn hand held gadgets/ video games. Congrats on the purchases.
Most of all have fun!

There should be a black Karmann plate on the drivers side door jamb that has the chassis number and paint code on it.
