I thought I would drive the 914 in to work this morning since it’s going to be nice today in Jacksonville but I had to turn around and go home. It was just above freezing when I left the house but I was dressed to deal. The problem was a howling noise that sounded like it was coming from in front of me. It was an on or off noise that came on once the car got to about 15 mph. Stopped when I slowed down. Had no affect on the car running and turning the heater off had no affect on the noise. Kinda sounds like an angry ghost trying to scare me. Any idea what it could be?

Front of the car inside the cockpit or out side the cockpit?

Any chance your tach or speedo were acting erratically?

Was the noise proportional to your speed?

Did it change at all when you loaded the car up by turning left or right at speed?

sounds like a front wheel bearing, everyone forgets to repack them

The weird thing was it didn’t seem proportional to speed. It was no noise then the same steady noise once I got to a certain speed. Sounds like it’s coming from behind the speedo. Maybe a relay chatter. I even pushed the horn thinking it had gone wonky but the horn blew like normal and no affect on the noise.

The howling noise is pretty common for wheel bearings in any car.

I have a similar noise that comes and goes. It sounds like it’s coming from the speedo too. I wonder if it’s the cable.

Installing a new speedometer cable take all of an hour.

They do wear and they do dry up......

It’s the speedo cable. Speedo is acting weird and the sound changes with the needle bounce. Any tricks to replacing it?

I just replaced mine...entire sheath and all. It was very easy. First..attach some string to the speedo (interior) end and pull the cable out from the rear (after disconnecting from the angle drive of course). Next tie the string onto the new end and pull it back into the car from the front end of the tunnel. Screw back into the speedo and the angle drive and you are done!

Took me about 15 minutes cause you have to do some stuff like remove the drivers side carpet..the little access cover up by the gas peddle on the tunnel etc. Once you pull it through make sure it's not tangled with the throttle cable and clutch cable. But if you use the string to pull it out and back in you should be done!

For anyone using this thread to troubleshoot in the future it is temperature related. It was under 40 degrees when I left for cars and coffee and it howled and the speedometer bounced all the way there. Over 60 degrees driving home and smooth speedometer and not a peep. I’m going to go ahead and just replace it since it’s probably going to get worse.

Resurrecting this thread to thank @jdamiano . I love the world.

Drove to work today in 29 degrees. Started making the ghost sound above 15mph. Clearly coming from in front of my face. I felt around and the speedo was physically buzzing. The speed reading was now +/- 25mph.

I look forward to not hearing it on the warm ride home. I am glad I had earplugs in the car. Will get a new cable on order.

that happened to me right after I bought the car, the cable eventually snapped at the transmission! after I replaced it the elbow on the transmission died too! AA provided a nice replacement for that as well.

before I reinstalled the cable, I hung it from the garage rafters and sprayed Kroil into it until it ran out the bottom.

probably any light oil would be fine.

still running the original cable with 150K on it.

Not that I am too cheap to buy a new one, but this worked
