Hello folks,

I've a couple of questions that I've thought of whilst sipping tea and dismantling the Colonel.


Is it wise, common practice, adviseable, to replace the original wiring? or, should I test it and then put it back if it all works?

Are there any other parts which should be replaced, period? like relays, things like that?

And finally, for now, the petrol tank....whats the best way to re condition that? looks quite cruddy in there, but very little rust seems to be present on either the outside, or the inside. I removed a couple of litres of VERY stinky old fuel already.

New tanks available from J P Dansk, cheap in the UK. Try 911Ltd.com. No new wiring harnesses available. Some relays available but check fitment. Not always listed correctly

You could buy a new tank, or depending upon the cost, take your tank to a radiator shop to have it boiled out and see what condition it is in. Then check into having the inside coated to protect it and refinish the outside like new.

Like sixer said - there are no new harnesses available so repair and restore as needed.

Nobody makes a 914-4 chassis harness.

There are about 72 different variables for a main wiring harness depending on year and options. Jeff is your man for this.

Jeff doesn't do chassis harnesses. I asked.

It's best to remove the harness completely i'm guessing, when I do a full shell respray?

Kroon only does the -6 harnesses because he cant get the -4 specific connectors in quantities less than 1000 pieces. (-6 connectors are the same as 911)

If you want it to look like a 100% new car then yes. However a used harness is even harder to put back than a new one because it's a lot stiffer and more brittle. Unless you're going for a 100 point car you can get a good look by bagging the rear wiring at the firewall and the front wiring in the bottom of the gas tank well.

Thanks Jonathan, I think I'll test the harness, then leave it in situ like you suggest.I remember re shelling an MGBGT and the harness was a complete pig to get back in.
