Hi Folks,

I'm new to the forum. I've been trying to get my project up and going for a couple of years now and it's finally about to get some momentum over the coming months.

I tried to start a thread in the 'Restoration and Build Threads' area but I got a note saying that I didn't have permission to do so. Is it cool to start a build thread in this part of the forum?

Thanks and greetings from Australia.
// Luke.

Welcome...
FUEL14
Thanks very much for the welcomes. I'll back up a bit and fill in some history from the last few years.

I'm a Brit, living in Australia since '06. I have a media brand called Fuel Tank http://fueltank.cc/.

I bought this car in the motherland in 2001, shortly after it had been imported there from California. I did a few bits and pieces to make it my own (lowering, seat trimming, Bilstein shocks, Autometer gauges, covered the targa roof in Mercedes convertible fabric and a few other cosmetics) and enjoyed driving it lots and lots. This is how it was then. This is was at a photoshoot for Ultra VW magazine in 2004 at Rockingham Raceway in the UK where the relatively shortlived 'ASCAR' series was held.

The car in the back was being raced at the time by Ben Collins, the original Top Gear 'Stig' and Daniel Craig's Bond stunt driver.

IPB Image

After enjoying the car in Europe for five years, I was offered a job here in Australia and I locked up the '14 and made my way here and I've been here ever since. The car sat for quite a while and I finally got round to bringing it over here a couple of years ago. Here are some pictures of what it looked like on the day that I dragged it out of the lock-up in the UK and sent it off on a flatbed to start its journey to Australia:

When we started stripping it back, we found that the rear quarters were the worst part. Generally, the rest wasn't too bad....

IPB Image

IPB Image

... but the rear truck floor needed to be refabricated. The guys did a stellar job cutting out the rust and making up a new steel floor:

Things are looking up. I've been told that I'm next in line for the paint booth, so things should pick up in the next couple of weeks.

It's been almost a year since it was primered, so I'm keen for the next step. Here are some picks from that stage:

I just signed the final colour off yesterday and the car will be painted in the next few days. She's all prepped in the booth, ready to go...

Welcome Luke,
That should be a beautiful car when it is all done.
Looking at the photos of the car and parts in the booth it seems that you are going with a fiberglass rear bumper. Is that right? Front also? What are you going to do with the targa top this time?
Be well, enjoy, and keep the photos coming.
Bill.
FUEL14

Thank you, Bill. Yes, fibreglass front and rear bumpers from GT Racing, along with a limited edition lower front spoiler... the most problematic parts that I've had the misfortune of buying so far. But, all sorted now.

The targa has been filled and smoothed and will be body colour also. The whole car is to be body colour. Sail panels, sill and all.

Thanks for following, I will be asking lots of questions along the way.

After the best part of a year since first contacting Len Hoffman, my pair of HAM heads just arrived here in Australia today. A big thanks to Len (HAM Inc) for all the great communication over the last 12 months.

Looks a lovely colour Luke. What green is that?

I love the green!

Very nice. So what’s the cost to paint a car in Australia
FUEL14
Here's the green, it's based on a rare 356 colour. I shot this RWB 911 'Kizuna' in Indonesia last year and I was inspired by the colour scheme, so my friends who built Kizuna sent me a sample from the build and we've matched closeish to it.

If you keep following this build, you'll see more influences from Kizuna come through such as the dark interior and exterior detailing. You could say that my 914 will be a 'baby brother' to Kizuna.

You can see my full article on Kizuna by clicking here.

Thanks, Jim. Almost... It's not a full resto, the interior metal and underpinnings have all been left untouched.

Thanks. It was a tricky decision to go for something so different, but I'm really happy with it.

As much as you're prepared to spend.

Things are ticking along here. The front end is out for rebuilding, the rear shocks and springs are out. I scrubbed and painted the underside of the car, the interior floor has had some attention and now I'm working on some custom dash ideas.

Hey that's looking great Luke, I'm envious!! beer.gif Keep it up, and welcome btw.

Quick question.. at one point your entire car was primed white (looks white on my monitor) but then in the next shots it's dull black w/ grey looking filler at the quarter fenders. Can you give me a quick explanation? I assume imperfections were found after a black sealer went on? but could not be seen with the white primer? I assume a fresh black sealer followed, and was used under the green, right? Sorry just trying to understand the process your guy used.

Hi, thanks for the welcome, I appreciate it. I don't recall all the exact steps with the paint prep, but yes, the black was the last layer of primer before the green.
FUEL14
Some lockdown progress from me. I've done a few things over the last few months.

I've been taking advantage of the autumn sunshine to prep and paint some front end parts:

I stripped the old covers off the driver's seat and had a go at installing one of the 914 Rubber kits. Excuse the wrinkles, but I'm a car DIY newbie and I'm not used to doing these kinds of jobs. It's all good fun though, and I'm learning lots along the way.

And, most recently, I've mocked up a few interior parts to see how things are going to look. I have a new gauge plate from Rennline, a MOMO Prototipo Heritage Edition wheel, Autometer Tach and footplates and shifter from Thorotec in Germany.

Wow, GREAT looking color! And you're a braver man than I, doing all that work AFTER fresh paint...

Loving the progress! FYI, if you put a damp towel over the wrinkles and loose aeas on your seats and run a steam iron over them, the fabric will tighten up and pull most or al of the wrinkles out. The pros use a steamer which you might be able to rent, but I found the towel and iron that I already had on hand worked great.

Thanks, I'll sort it down the track, no rush. A bit of usage in the sunshine come spring will also help.

I've been working away at the custom dash panel. It's not finished yet, but I've got about as far as I'm happy with before it needs to be powder coated in black.

The main jist is that it will be black mesh with a sheet of raw aluminium behind. I am placing various items in the panel such as toggle switches, LEDs, USB ports and a mobile phone holder in the centre. It's been fun to make, particularly since I've never done any metalwork in my life... Just making it up as I go.

Thanks for looking.

I made a start on the door cards today. Matt from 914 Rubber supplied me with some plain door cards last year that he custom stitched in orange for me. Today I got round to making up some RS-style door pulls. I used a roll of orange webbing and a craft eyelet punch tool. I then drilled into the door casing and mounted the loop with a bolt.

I cut a hole in the new door card and threaded the loop through, finishing off with genuine 911 RS plastic pull loop escutcheons.

The main difference with this method to regular 911 RS pulls is that mine pulls the door closed, whereas they open the door. This method is more in line with my skill level as I did not want to get into mounting the loop to the opening mechanism.

Thanks for looking.

A fair bit has happened recently, but I'll jump forward to the interior that I finished a few weeks ago.

I laid down a layer of Carbuilders acoustic foam to go between the sound deadening and the carpet:

IPB Image

IPB Image

IPB Image

IPB Image

FUEL14
I then made a start on the carpet, also from Carbuilders (Melbourne). It's not a 914 kit, I started with a roll of raw material. It's not the most hard-wearing carpet around, but it goes around corners really nicely and easy to glue down and trim to size.

Since I threw the factory backpad in the bin a couple of years ago, it's been my intention to carpet all the way up to the rear glass, so that's what I did.
