Full Version: Replaced Shifter Bushings

I need some help from you guys. I just replaced the Ball Cup, Both Coupler Bushings, Firewall Bushing and Shift Rod Bushing at transaxle (AKA Crown Bushing). Went on a test drive and everything is feeling much tighter and smoother-got into 5th Gear and it popped out. Tried several times and it continues to pop out-I don't want to keep on trying it in 5th and cause a problem or chip an tooth since it is not going in all the way. I didn't have any problems with popping out of any gears prior to replacing the bushings.
I've search the forum and haven't been able to find how to adjust the linkage.

Put the shifter in 5th gear, Use a bungee to hold it there.
Loosen the rod clamp bolt just under the shifter.
Go to the rear transmission linkage and push it all the way into 5th position (should almost be there).
Tighten rod clamp bolt and test drive.
Make slight adjustments as needed.
Done.

Thanks Mike. I was really bummed on the test drive but knew that there was an adjustment just couldn't find anything in my search.

Hi gonzo54, did the advice of Mike solve the issue with the shifting ?

In gerneral, always mark and index current linkage settings with a fine tip sharppie before making adjustments.

I suspect it is just an adjustment as 5th generally is not worn enough to pop out. You just need a little more throw.

Hi Frankvw, No it didn't work- I tried the bungie and 5th gear adjustment several times today and discovered that I installed the Bronze Shift Rod Bushing at the transaxle (914 WERKE) backwards and it was interfering with the the range and throw of the shift rod.

I now have 5th Gear and it doesn't pop out. Numerous fine adjustments and test drives and it's working good!

Ok...I have been tackling this for years...getting the slop out of the shifting linkage....is there any way that someone can make the final bushing that has been made out of bronse just a teensy ineesty a bit smaller so the slop is eliminated? I know us guys would lube the hell out of it so it would never bind up but we need closer tolerances I believe. Just a itsy bit closer tolerance would really help....don't you think??

On both sides of the bushing....outer and inner....someone please tighten these up and oh boy won't we all be happy and buy a ton of these new ones? Just my humble opinion....I have been using tin foil and glue for way too long...thank you my brothers and sisters.

gonzo54 : that was a good and bad moment at the same time when you discovered that I guess :-) Good to hear it it solved !

I also found the bronze bushing to be a little too small so I took some measurements and spun one out of Delrin. Made a nice difference. I’d guess that they’re all a little different so it’s not an exact fit.

I’d like to get one of Foley’s kits, it makes a lot of sense when you look at it.

I had to file the hole out to fit this type of bush as the PO had sleeved the opening with a piece of steel tube and pressed it in.
If you have some movement in the bush add another washer under the surclip.
Don't bother with the grease as the bushing is impregnated with oil,if you don't have the plastic cover the grease will attract road grime and wear the bush out,its not needed even if you have the cover.
Great that you had a simple solution to what could have been a gearbox issue.
