Full Version: Lightened flywheel – 11.8 pounds

Lightened flywheel that looks to be balanced but a bit dusty from sitting around for quite a few years. My scale measured this at 11.8 pounds.

Local Southern California pick up would be great, or can ship at your cost.

Asking $189, reasonable offers encouraged.

Can you guys take me to school on if this is too light for street use? Too dirty to be attractive? Just keen on better understanding the supply/demand on this. Happy to work with anyone that’s interested, would like to find a home for it here if it’s genuinely good to run, otherwise will cut it loose with full description elsewhere.

IMHO no point in a lightened flywheel for street use. Too many disadvantages.

For racing, guys usually want them lightened to the extreme.

On top of that, there is always the question of whether or not it is truly functional as a used part or whether it will need to be resurfaced to be useful.

A bit of cleanup and some measurements of friction surface dimesnions vs. the factory manual spec might generate a lot more intest. Also a good picture of the surface the RMS rides on would help. If that surface is jacked then it is scrap (again IMHO) though I know there are ways to offset the RMS and/or sleeve it. Just too much work for me.

Just my opinion as a parts junkie constantly trolling FS/WTB screwy.gif

I disagree.

We have run a lightened flywheel in Betty's /4 for years. It has been great. Throttle response is quicker, and the engine feels more responsive overall. We have only found one disadvantage, the clutch wears faster.

Would a 2.0 / 2056 / bigger make the loss of flywheel momentum a non-issue?

The red Turbo car with the 2.7, which was only running on three cylinders mind you) seems to work fine with a lightened flywheel.

I'm interested in this,
but the big thing about getting a used flywheel is the seal area.

If the snout where the main seal rides is scored from a burned bearing,
or, like here, all rusty/crusty..

There will be a sleeve installed, or a lathe turning job, or even worse, the thing will get tossed.

So,
If you could take a minute and hit the seal area with some 400 wet/dry or emery cloth,
Then post a pic here,
We would all know if this was a junk part or not.
