Hello All,

My '74 1.8 car has an ignition coil bracket with two holes in it. One is round and the other is square. I believe it to be original. Can anyone tell me if this is an original bracket and what the holes are for?

Thanks,
James

yes, thats an original coil bracket.
never had to change the coil on mine.
far as i know the holes do nothing and have nothing through them.
the black orig coil on mines got nothing on it in terms of bumps or engaging pins.

dunno why they had the holes.
when you look at a kombi or type 4 its not clear why the holes are there either.
someone may know.

My guess is it was an off the shelf item used on another VW product.

Side note: what hardware is used to mount that coil? I think it is M10 1.0 but what length and head configuration? Any washers, what type? Thanks

It took me many months to find one of those for my project...

M6 bolt with a flat washer and lock washer. I like to use an allen head bolt as it is hard to access once installed. @narp914

@jamesj
My guess is that the hole located and held the part to form the ends while manufactured. Or speed holes

Lightning holes to save weight.

Thanks everyone. The PET shows a #2 for the 1.7/2.0 and a #2a for the 1.8, but no further explanation. I am curious if anyone has a 1.8 car with an original bracket without holes.

I have seen the fan housing coil brackets on buses, type 4s and 914s, never seen one without the extra holes.

Does anyone have one of those brackets they would like to sell? @bdstone914

It's weight savings to keep the 50/50 distribution correct!

@Rgolia

I probably do.
Or you can reshape your tin mounted to fit on the shroud.

If he does not, try the samba, do a search or a local VW place that has lots of parts stored away. I stumbled onto a place like that and had one moments after I asked.

@bdstone914

I will take it if you do. I modified the one I had and as jerry rigs tend to go the coil and bracket went for a ride in my engine compartment. No damage, but I was on the side of the road for a bit.

@rgolia

Yep. Have an original 1.8 with original bracket and coil. The two holes are there. Never noticed them before.... confused24.gif
