MSDS exhaust headers installed by RuF on this beauty >>my Sonauto #40 style with our improved merged collectors. Alois ordered 2 sets 1) for this white tribute car, and another set on a tribute car I noticed on Instagram. I'll give him a pass on RuF taking credit for 'Their Stainless Steel exhaust' system...I've met with him and Alois is a totally stand up guy ! The headers are NOT sold in SS, only raw carbon steel/ or Ceramic coated, these in the BaT ad are raw carbon steel.
His BaT writer was probably not aware.

good eye you have jeff.
the answer is a rock star. rock stars are all the same.

but .......its also not tin, its fibreglass. probably passable? maybe. grommet probably shatter the edges of the no doubt well and truly aged epoxy assuming its vintage "tins" or is that "plastics" in the case of a "not a not a real porsche" engine. i dunno. beerchug.gif

The #40 gt equipped with sheet metal/ no fiberglass here. We did get her with several bumps + grinds appearing on the tin>> but came out perfect after using body shop hammers/ tools then blasted, powder coated. For sure a nice new grommet installed there too. Fiberglass is a nice touch + not necessarily period correct to a gt...but unless it is flame retardant a faulty Weber /fuel line could be a handful.

Well they did install Glendale's best.
Factory gt headers (re-purposed from 906) only available in 1.5" o/d tubing>> way restrictive on a 2.4L We build these in 1.625" and 1.75" o/d for bigger engines. RuF went with the larger size, and the engine makes just under 250 hp welder.gif

Nice car and typical build, but to me nothing special or out of the ordinary. Just another GT replica. Curious what the RUF name will bring to the auction. I am surprised.. You would think it would at least have a RUF steering wheel, Seats and some custom body work.
JmuRiz
They began as a mechanic garage and still to Porsche restorations. The Ruf labeled cars are all them (or previously bodies in white that Ruf builds up with their own VIN).

If I had unlimited budget I’d have them do a factory style restomod biggrin.gif

Another 'Perk for these exhaust headers is that their 'Tribute Build went through the TüV inspection, and has passed with an OK smile.gif

The VIN stamping on the right inner fender is dodgy. The paint badge is not correct; and what number did they use for the production #? The transmission serial and type numbers certainly look like 911 and not a 914/6.
Other than that, the car build looks good.

Agreed, build looks good, looks great really, and I would be damned proud to own it. And yes, there have been several other similar builds here that are/were fantastic as well. The purists out there may not like them so much, but there have been plenty of nice original restoration projects from the members here too, bringing hopeless looking rust piles back to life. pray.gif

I was also looking closely at the VIN# and especially the replacement Karmann badge. I was going to ask you what that production # meant. Couldn't read the tranny number well enough to determine what car it came from. I'm not sure how much any of it matters if one is looking to buy a highly modified replica GT tribute clone. first.gif

Are the RSR /917 calipers reproductions?

Any other 914s with these?

Well, 9140430059 has the same kind of asterisks. That is the press car in England that was crashed and had a chassis replacement. Those asterisks were used on 1971 & 1972. All the 1970 cars had stars. I wonder if this is another chassis replacement? The VIN plate on the headlight bucket is correct but has some small imprefections in it.

Sure looks like an excellent build

I've had my 914-6 GT Tribute for 13 years now, on the road since 2018, and I never get tired of seeing my MSDS headers. I consider them a key part of my build.
They are truly a work of art! first.gif
I believe they look better than the ones on the BAT car, but I think it is very cool that your headers on on that car!

Jim>> those ceramic coated headers look 1 day old biggrin.gif For the high caliber of the B-A-T car's builder, forgoing some type of coating for performance + protection from the elements was not a good choice IMHO dry.gif

According to google that is $255,000 USD. Add in the Bat commission.

This is a great number for what I think is a really great car. Quality build with lots of great choices. Twin plug 2.4 that was still making great power at 8000rpm, fiberglass deck lids and bumpers, 901 side shifter, GP white (ala factory 910), boy racer interior, very cool 917 calipers (Erics work maybe?). Add in the Ruf provenance, famous owner etc etc.

What I like about this sort of retro mod build is that no one can really nit pick it for correctness because it is just a personal celebration of early Porsche and 914 goodness. And even better is that this car commanded big money and a serious amount of respect.

Congrats to all involved

When the Sonauto car was at Aase Motors for mechanical overhauling, I asked about switching over to side shifter. Jeff said he would hate to hurt the in-period substitution for the side shifter, says if I don't like it after the rebuild, I could do the updated style.
After putting a few hundred miles on the #40, it goes through the gears as smooth as my side-shifter 901's

It is an absolute crime that this went for that much more than Bob Bs car as there is far FAR less car here.

Whoever bought #41 got the steal of the century.

I mean this is a nice car and im glad it brought this much, but not even comparable. guess we should all be shipping our cars to Europe to sell them.

Just as a for what it is worth..

This is a set of headers Ralph Meaney used on his 914's back in the day.
They look pieced together..

I used these on a 2.5 years ago..

wouldn't disagree with your conclusion re #41.

though you would be wasting your time and money shipping your car to europe?
thats not why the L D car got the $ it did? other fuzzy factors involved concerning reputations and provenance? kind of like crazy stuff that goes on in the art world sometimes.

all i can say is i bought my 914 FOUR back in the mists of time because it was affordable and pretty damn good for the $. and i am glad i did. plenty of people had to tell me i was an idiot for liking them and buying one. esp for the stoopidity and trouble of bringing one all the way back to aus and jumping through all the hoops to do it. all i ever copped was insults. world has changed. dunno if i think its for the better but. i kind of am still attached to my NARPness. beerchug.gif

The trans is from a '70-'71 911 to get a larger/stronger pull type clutch.
No plastic pulley needed. The 914 rear cover is a bolt-on to the 911 trans.
Some odd things are incorrect (slotted ! ) screws on the drivers side rearview mirror
and a flat countersunk one at the top of the drivers sail panel, in the same pic
the top appears to be covered with material...Hartz cloth ?
Great color. Beautiful car. Must be a screamer.

Who can explain the dual master cylinders for me? I have not seen anything quite like that before on a 914. Both appear to be brakes, but it's really hard to see. Unless the second master is for a hydraulic clutch on that trans... confused24.gif
