Dusty, but the rear trunk seems to be free of rust bubbles and came POR-15d!

Concerned about the condition of the floorpan, I scraped away a bit of the tar and found clean, primered metal below, with no sign of malignant rust.

The hell hole needs some work, but it has at least been stabilized by the application of POR15. I'll probably bend up some metal and weld it in, or maybe get a replacement piece.

The bad news is here... The piece that holds the weatherstrip in on the front trunk is pretty bad. Luckily it didn't spread into the front trunk, that area seems pristene.

Okay, last picture for now.. The front of the car seems pretty good, this shot shows the fuel tank void, and all the fresh air blower stuff installed and very clean.

So here's the story of this car...
A year ago I decided to drop the engine on AKAVW I to replace a burst oil cooler. Then I decided to do some more work of course, and in the process, discovered how really incredibly crappy AKAVW I really was. So I decided to stop work and have been looking for a roller for a few months. In December, my friend Royce pointed me to this post on the Pelican Parts BBS http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread....threadid=141054 and I thought, oh man that thing must be gone. I sent him an email and in early January I picked it up. That was quite an ordeal, detailed here... http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act...2&t=7991&hl=tow So anyway I got the thing towed to my aunt's house in Carlsbad, and it sat in her garage for almost a month. I went and got it Sunday and now its finally home. So yes, somehow I ended up with the mythical 'free, almost rust free roller.' I still have to get a new title for the car and register it, but I think I've figure out how to do that. I'm still cutting up the old rusty heap, but I should be able to get started on this in a week or two. -Tony |

Yeah, I think it was a pretty good deal. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/boldblue.gif)
AKAVW I was a severly molested, badly put together, and rusting piece of work. It seems that there was probably 50 lbs of bondo on the car, a ton of fiberglass, etc. Wires were twisted together and taped up, rather than soldered or replaced, and the clutch tube was secured with wire, rather than welded, of course speaker holes in the doors, and tons of crap like that. Not to mention the longs were very visibly warped in many places and rusted through. This one however, seems to be pretty original. Its originally silver, and the respray(s) seem to be well done. Most of the parts that are on the car now appear to be original, or at least installed very well. The POR15 is present in the trunks and the engine bay, and there is no evidence of bondo except for a small repair on the rear fender which I will take care of. I figure it will take me a few months to put th parts into this car. I'm still trying to decide if I want to put steel flares on, or leave it stock. -Tony |

Tony, see if someone can give you an idea of how hard it is to patch up the hell hole. I think DNHunt recently did that same area?
From the pics Tony has sent me I am amazed by how good the long is underneath despite the hole up above. Looks like he got to it in time! PS The best part of this roller (I don't know if you said this) is it was FREE!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mueba.gif) |

I just did that (actually looked exactly like that), Im busy now, but you might find it in the archives.. I took cardboard and cut pieces of carboard to fit, then I cut metal (used an old door for the metal) and then slightly hammered it into the shape that would fit flush and weld good. Mig (if you'll call it that) welded it, and its very strong. Then I welded the battery tray in. All in all looks pretty good (havent cleaned up the underwelds yet..), then I por 15'ed it and painted it. Not that hard, its the prepwork thats a pain.
