Have a small plasma cutter. I don't like the warped metal, or dealing with the dribbles on the edge. I've gotten really handy with a cutoff wheel in the last 10 years. It's my #1 most used tool (okay, aside from the 13mm wrench).

We cut a groove along the bottom of the long and added vertical reinforcement plates that were welded to the angle iron on top and butt-welded to the bottom.

We added 5 plates over a total length of about 16 inches. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sawzall-smiley.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welder.gif)

I'll be glad to be done with the frame/structure work. We should have all that buttoned up next weekend. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/boldblue.gif)

Mmmm goober welds.

Gotta crank up the heat when welding 1/8" steel! (doesnt help that your welding upside down...)

Awesome progress, Thats the hard and critical part right there... Good final result!

Turned up all the way and there was no room for the 'torch'. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

We'll be working next Sat if you wanna show me how it's done. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif)

The only way to get good welds in there would have been by cutting more of the long out to get better access.

There was barely enough room for the torch and no way to get a good angle.

What welder? What wire?

Try turning down your wire speed?

I weld the thick 1/8" stuff all the time w/ my Lincoln 135 on .030 wire. D setting ~ 3.5 wire speed. However I know a lot of the body shops use .023 wire as its better on 18 and 20 guage.

But then again, I know how hard it is to weld in a tight space upside down... Literally impossibly.. Put the stick up there, hold the trigger, and hope for the best..

Now you're gettin' it. I coulda put a nice clean bead on it if it were laying in front of me. No problem. Upside down welding through a 8" hole, nope. Besides, the car was already stable, this extra metal is just peace-of-mind metal.

How about cutting a few holes on the side of the longs and welding from there?

The welds are solid. No need to make them look pretty ...
