I used to sell universal joints to THOMAS before he defected back to Germany which he used to made side shift trans rear conversion rods. I wonder who has done this and is there a noticeable improvement in shift feel?
I see the $200 shift couplers Pelican sells for 911's that are made with a similar principle.

Anyone use one of the above couplers and have an opinion to offer?

He can give details. Maybe he'll see this and respond. Or you can PM him.

the link didn't work for me

but I use a pair of universal joints, 360degree couplers on my custom shift linkage
I've got a few more tricks incorporated into mine too:

dual rear bushings on the console
a custom cup bearing holder
a custom shifter
and a straight chromoly rod
brass bushings on the rear
and a special delrin firewall bushing

its the best shifting 914 I've ever driven in 30+years of them.

Tangerine Racing makes a linkage kit that uses what appear to be steering universal joints as well as dual bushings at the rear shift console.

http://www.tangerineracing.com/transmission.htm

JWest Engineering used to offer a linkage kit that included steering universal joints as well. I think that kit is discontinued.

I like the shift linkage that Brant has put together. Very neat. I need to learn to weld. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welder.gif)

Universal joints, I think similar to the ones Brant used, can be found at Pegasus Racing.

I just had the tangerine racing setup installed on my car. What a difference it makes.
Well worth the money.

I've done one with 2 universal joints on the shift rod and added another mount at the transaxle shift console. I also used a B&M mustang shifter. I removed all of this when I went to a Boxster transaxle.

I've done it with a steering coupler, I don't have the car on the hoist to take a pic.
To use them you have to have the twin bushing mod at the console.

Only bad on using the steering coupler is the joint is exposed, but if it's a fair weather car that shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks Brant. That looks great. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif) I will most likely go a similar route.

We use the Stompski couplers in all the 911's in the shop. Makes a huge difference. Stephen is s good friend of the shop and we have every tool and part he makes.

So the steering coupler won't fit inside that boot?

I'm sure Stompski makes some great stuff but for the CSOB you can get something similar for @ $40.

I made my own bolt on double bush console as well, came out good, not a big deal but just for a boot solution I should have made the shaft about an inch longer at the U-joint.

The bolt on console is great for the bolt on crowd, but the next one for my sons 914 I'm just going to TIG weld heavy ears on like Brant has done.
