Indeed, it is very interesting. Code 98 is a custom color, but an existing paint, so the color had to be a current paint available to VW or Porsche. A paint to match a color sample was code 99, thus a true custom color.

At the time Britt was asking, I did a search for VW and Porsche color codes that looked a match, but did not come up with anything. I wish I could get an actual chip sample of the paint to work with. Computer colors are nearly useless.

Rick, I really need the chassis #, I'll bet they are 1 number off as well. If not, there may be more.

Jason, I need info on the engine, interior color, options, etc.

I don't know much. Everything had pretty much been altered before I got it. The interior I believe was black. The engine, I don't know. It has 1.8L case with 2.0L Porsche heads. So I doubt its original. It doesn't have a console and I don't know if it ever did. It did have rear defrost from what I can tell.

The history as I know it....

Car came from CA. It was a friend of mine, and he had owned it for a while. He brought it from CA, to AZ. When his HOA started to give him a hard time, he gave it to me for free. Other than that, I know very little and nothing else is peculiar that I can see.

Jason,

a couple of pointers for determining engine:
check the decal on the evap tank above the fuel tank for the tire description, SR=1.7, HR=2.0
check the engine compartment above the realy board for the engine decal, EA=1.7, GA=2.0
Typically the 2.0 came loaded in 1973 with sway bars, Fuchs alloys, fog lights, chrome bumpers, console. Loop pile carpet as well.

Not quite true. I put a lot of effort into trying to find the true paint. I needed you to get me an accurate depiction of the color to work with. I did about all I could with the info available.

And yeah, not too many were pleased that you chopped the front end off when you had offers of alternates.

Now... now... Be nice, <!-- emo& -->(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif)<!-- endemo --> Britt saved his car. Britt needed to have his car fixed in short order. He had no wheels. After seeing this car his decision was a no brainer. I think I was an absolute a$$ about the car. This one is truly a parts car. The rust and damage are extensive. It will be a real challenge for me to repair just the rust damage and quite frankly I'm not quite convinced I should. (well almost)

Replacing the front will take a week of evenings. The most time will be spent making a fixture to be sure the pickup points are aligned. Not a real big part of the repair.

I am working to locate a suitable parts car within a couple of hundred mile. If I can locate a parts car with a good front and right quarter panel, maybe some good wiring, and next to free I'll definitely fix it.

For now, I want to find out as much as possible about this car and NOW Jasons car! The puliminary D&A tests show we may have sisters! Now that's exciting!

Both decals MIA.

What I know...
The car didn't have factory sway bars.

When I got the car, it had chrome bumpers and fog lights.
However, the foglights were not Hella, they could have been an afterthought.
But, it does have the factory fog light switch.

When I got the car, it had Rivieras on it.

The guy told me the original color was gaurds red. I don't remember what I thought about that at the time, if he was on crack or if I believed him. I don't remember if he said he re-painted or not. I don't think he did.

Dave, I may be able to graft you a good color sample. I noticed a bolt on the door where the re-paint has chipped off and exposed the original color. I could send you it, or maybe I can find another good piece.

NO, Thanks for posting that though. I searched PP way back when(2-3 years ago) I got this car to determine the color code and also saw that post. I looked for it again last night, but I couldn't find it. All I could remember was the P***y pink description. I searched it literally last night, no blacked out letters in P***y and I couldn't find it. I was going to mention here that I saw that post, I just didn't know how to relay the P***y pink context. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/laugh.gif)

Somewhere in that post, I think they conclude that the car was Bahia Red. I thought, until yesterday/today, this car was originally Bahia Red because of that thread. But, I knew the paint code didn't jive.

Now, there may be 3rd?

Bahia Red L30E was a standard color for 71 through 74 so it could not be that color. The code 98 means custom and extra cost.
So far, see my own thread, we have 11 VIN's with code 98. That is pretty small percentage of total production. Any custom color demands special treatment IMHO.

Jason, please post the chassis # to be sure I read it correctly.

either here or on pelican the VIN was posted. I know, i had the title right in my hand.

you asked me via email to check the paint code and to take a snapshot of the paint...which I couldn't do.

the car was about 10-15 minutes from where I live for a month or two during the year...and abround 3 hours from where I live now...
