Hi everyone,

I make the 911R parts for the 911 guys, AR Concepts.

I was asked by a few people now to make 911R style tail lights for the 914. It's a lot of work to get the first set out so I'm asking before I start.

What do you guys think?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Mike Swanson

I would like a housing and light that replaces the entire flip-up mechanism and motor for the headlights, and leaves a nicely covered light in its place (like on a Ferrari F40). Delete the motors and the housing and left with a nice clean plastic cover and save 40 pounds!

KaptKaos, sort of like how the 924GTR looked? That would rock (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

Mike,

Make the base in Carbon Fiber, you'll get buyers. I really like the "R" idea but have chosen another design.

Are you an RGruppe member? I like what Cris has created, I may have to get a tail dragger. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)

No I'm not an Rgruppe member. I actually don't even own one. I used to work with Freeman Thomas and he asked if I could make R light that actually fit the car. Thats how I got mixed up in all this Porsche stuff.

Carbon Fiber is a real pain to layup in shapes like that. It wouldn't be worth it, unless people wanted to pay a few hundred bucks just for the plates. To do it I would have to use prepreg and autoclave it to get it in the corners.

Headlights wouldn't be bad, but small projector assemblies aren't that cheap.

like turbo914.com (or 914turbo.com) used to promise was coming?!

seriously, they used to have a "kit" to put lights like you are talking about in... similar to a mitsu 3000GT(later style, with 3 small headlights, not flip up)... which I've long thought about trying to adapt to a 914... they are almost the same size...

yea, my first teener, the PO had removed the flip-ups and put square Chebbie headlights in the holes, cut the bumper to make it work, and put black plexi over it... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/barf.gif)

Mike,

Relatively high considering complete hoods are $500 to $800 each. Maybe you can simplify the bezel...

yea, those headlights are hideous on a 914... I'll try and find pics of "whitey" when I brought it home... those headlights were the first thing I took car of.. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/sawzall-smiley.gif) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smash.gif)
the PO had jacked the headlights wiring so bad, I never got the headlight motors to work... it basically looked like the pics above, but the plastic over the square headlights was "smoked" which is my opinion of the whole Idea (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smoke.gif)

It really should be done with HID projector units. That would be cool, and is probably the only hope of actually hitting the road on low-beams. I plan on working on this several years in the future when my car actually runs.

When I get some lights, I'll make a quick prototype and post the pictures when done.

Royce,

This is what I did for the front side markers, VW late model clear, amber flash, markers behind the front fenders. A hell-of-bunch of work. I won't do it again.

Original is heavier. Not really concerned with looks, but with weight. Gathering parts and info now to build me a lightweight.
