So my latest build is a '75 Appearance Group car.
Car is currently in the body shop being stripped to bare metal. Motor and tranny were just rebuilt... going for a retro look. Rivs, Porsche negative side stripe, Monza exhaust, Vittaloni mirrors and a few interior items to keep it '70s (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif) got a load of stuff from MikeK (914magazine) today. 4 very nice Rivs 2.0L heat exchangers with associated heater stuff Monza exhaust 2.0L muffler hanger Koni front struts spare trigger points Custom pedal board original grain vinyl for the sail panels and targa bar here are some pics of the stuff. first pic is one of the heater tubes media blasted second pic is tube final product. entire exhaust system will be done the same. Pic of one of the Rivs I did a quick polish with power ball and aluminum polish.. black paint on the Rivs is perfect, just needs to be cleaned and waxed. here are a couple of pics of stuff that will be media blasted by myself tomorrow and then painted by me (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) The point of this car is to build a daily driver that looks period correct, and to be a PAX weapon in the GGR AX series. Even with a very moderate suspension package I will be in AX 16 which will give me a very nice multiplication factor for TTOD. Funny you should mention that Rob....I have one in the garage in like new condition with a bunch of 8 track tapes (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

If you are lucky, you will get one run on that 8 track tape.
The glue adhearing the iron oxide to the mylar tape breaks down, and rubbing the tape across the head wipes off the oxide and the recording. Did work for NASA on that problem with their miles of tape of recorded satellite data. |

car was rolled out so it could be moved to the rack to make sure all the body panels are aligned correctly and all else is straight before the real body work begins... BTW - those Rivs are the re-pops, the originals on mine have a different rim without the lip & Riv logo center caps - they are brushed aluminum finish, not the polished like yours:  Hey - you other guys mentioning the 8-tracks (Rob Sime, RobW, etc.) - Plz post pix of them in the O&H one for original/period radios, as Jeff Bowlsby uses those in his 914 site for reference. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/type.gif) This is the VW4412 that was in mine when I got it used 3 yrs. back in Dec 75 (Motorola made for VW of America's accessories VOA division) - the AM/FM dial hinges back to insert the 8-track, with original dash filler plate that came with it:  I still have the 8-track collection too, but have worried about what Ken Wales was saying about the oxide delam problem. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) Hey Brent - I had the CB in mine too, but transferred it to our 88 Westy when we got that in 4/88 - still in there too - just in case! Saved our butts more than once with car problems on XC road trips before I had a cell! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

The Rivs that are currently on the car will be coming off and switched for the Repos I have. I like the polished look better and the black is shiney instead of being textured.
The current front ones are the newer version the rears are exactly like the one in your pic. All of that old exhaust stuff had no rust holes in it. Nothing on the heat exchangers or the muffler...it was all just surface rust that came right off with the media blast. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

I'm debating whether to keep these for bigger "modern" 195/65HR15's for semi-DD use. The Rivs have never been restored, so that's original black paint that I'd refinish, after sitting since May 85 on blocks in my garage, & on the car as a DD from at least 1975 or earlier. Mine is OE an early 73 914S/914-2.0 in L80E with #31 Beige interior - so I'm going back to the Light Ivory. Dan - there's a nice set of 4 Mahle Baby-gas burners (4 lugs) on TheSamba or evil-bay right now for $100 ea. (down in TX IIRC); & may also be more here, 914club, Pelican & TheSamba (under wheels &/or Porsche parts sections), classifieds, etc. You want to make sure any of them have a part no. on the back ending in -01 to fit your self-centering (Hub-centric) front hubs with the lips around the hole for the axle dust cover (same for Rivs) - otherwise they can't seat properly & could both chew up the back face of the wheels & come loose on hard cornering. The ones with p/n ending in -00 are made for the 70-72 914s without hub-centric front hubs. FYI - more info on this under the O&H wheels & tires nailed topics, where I'd posted a pic of the back of my Fuchs 2L with the machined inset for the lip & ....-01 p/n. Also, Al Reid down here in Anaheim does an excellent job of refinishing wheels - both to OE spec for CW & per customer request. IIRC - that link above also has a list of other wheel refinishers on it, but don't recall if any are near you. If you do them with Al by late next month, then I can bring them up with me & drop them when I come up to SFO for biz meetings around 4/26-28 time frame. Just PM or email me if you want that drop-off service. |

Ok made some progress yesterday. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
got the rest of the exhaust media blasted and painted...came out pretty nice for a quick job (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) also shot a few pics of the car being rolled out of the shop going onto the rack to pull a couple of corners to get all the panels to line up...then body work (IMG:style_emoticons/default/clap56.gif) muffler before and after heat exchangers before and after pics of car Attached thumbnail(s)
