We made our annual trek to the Hilton Head concours this past weekend. It is a great event on a beautiful island in South Carolina. Although this year a little chilly, there was no less participation and everyone had a great time viewing some of the most well preserved and beautiful cars in the World. The featured marque was the Jaguar XKE with about 25 examples showing on Sunday. Saturday was a significant gathering of the car clubs, and the midway attracted many to drive brand new BMWs and Porsches from local dealers.
We, this year, entered our 1965 Porsche 356 that we had been restoring for the last ten years, taking the car from a completely abandoned and stripped hulk to a show winner receiving a nice trophy for our efforts. We called it our right rear quarter panel, as we initially purchased the car sight unseen from a junkyard man for the quarter panel to repair another customer's 356. Upon delivery of the stripped hulk we saw that what was left of it had never been damaged, only needed a floor pan, had only been painted once, and was actually the last of the breed 1965 356 SC. We could not bring ourselves to use the car for parts, so instead went in the other direction, restoring the car but having to find every single part to put it back together. The ten year effort paid off with what you see here:
One of the amusing anecdotes was the appearance of Wayne Carini from "Chasing Classic Cars" fame. George and Wayne had grown up together in Glastonbury Connecticut, Wayne's dad being a classic car restorer of the highest honor, and George often checking out potential purchases down South for the dad, Bob. Wayne not knowing that George was to be at the show (and for that matter, George not knowing Wayne was going to be there either) was leading a large group of people around on a tour of the cars and came to one 68 original GTO. Knowing that Wayne had one in highschool, George suddenly piped up from the crowd, "Wayne, wasn't this one just like the car you had in Glastonbury High School?" to where Wayne ran over exclaiming: "George I didn't know you were going to be here! We have to catch up!" That said, Hussey then became sort of a minor celebrity himself, several of the reporters who could not get close to Wayne, now asking George about the man and how he became the Discovery Channel's latest sensation.
Hilton Head is probably becoming the premier East Coast concours as the years go by just for the fact that it is more centrally located than Amelia Island, and the venue is far superior. Amelia Island is really a dump except for the Ritz Carlton, and there is nothing to do there other than its spring concours competition.
