Has anyone ever repaired a bad Permatune box for a 6 ? I have one in a 911 that was installed brand new and it owuld appear that almost immediatly it wen tbad. The car then sat indoors for almost 20 years. Bench tests fine until I go to the ground (D ) to B. I get and overload there, I assume there is a blown capacitorma-jiggy ??? Not an expurt but I've always been told they are "potted" and not repairable.
Never tried to take one apart. HARNESS PIN OUTS A = + or 15, coil hot primary terminal ( - or 1, coil ground primary terminal is connected to the engine ground). B = Power from ignition switch. C = Distributor breaker points. D = Ground BENCH CHECK OF THE IGNITION BOX (Perma-Tune only) PIN A TO D = 3,300 Ohms +/- 100 is normal . Zero Ohm or lower than normal resistance indicates defective ignition coil damage to the box. PIN B TO C = 100 Ohms, +/- 1 is normal. Open circuit or higher than normal resistance indicates ground loop or over voltage damage to the box. PIN D TO MOUNTING FLANGE = Zero Ohms is normal. More than 0.2 Ohms indicates ground loop or battery terminal reversal damage to the box. PIN D TO PIN B = 220uF to 250uF.This reading requires the use of a meter capable of measuring capacitance. Polarity sensitive. Pin B is positive. Any other reading indicates over voltage damage to the spike suppression circuit of the ignition box. |

The thing that really sucks ( besides the price ) is the new units they sell look nothing like the original units. For the new price of 560.00 I'll see if one of the local geeks can repair this one. At least it wil look and mount correctly (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) |

Not true, Not all are "potted" I have two from about 20 years ago (still working) for my 911. Ones Blue and ones silver, neither one is "potted" With some basic testing tools they should be repairable

Edited first post with info from Permatune even though I am (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smoke.gif) ed.
I have had several ... couple of blues and one silver (think I gave it away). Car runs better with the Permatune over the Bosch unit. |

Check the Pelican site there was a article showing the parts and how it works, which can be used to repair it.

WOW (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) I couldn't find the specific thread you mentioned SVO, But after reading some of the other threads on Permadooms/ Permacraps etc. I'm thinking it isn't worth the effort of repairing it. Looks like it's going to be a rebuilt BOSCH unit

The Blue permatune boxes are good, If you find one don't be afraid to use it. actually installed by Porsche.
there are some red one too that are good. |

clean, de-flux, re-flow the solder joints
must be done by someone with GOOD soldering skills, the CORRECT tip size and temp range. if you dont understand that statement then it aint for you. |
