color dilemma, Color chosen.. Is material price reasonable? Options

I bought my car in 1981. Previous owners changed it from red to black. In the mid 80's I added the GT look. I am at a cross roads. I near time to paint and I am thinking of a different color. This is my first time painting anything more than a Revell Porsche so I am adventurous but I don't want to be in over my head either.

Wow...tough call but for me, red is a terrific color on these cars and not all that common. I would go red - and I mean that. If my Six was originally red, it too would be returning to the original color. I like the RSR wheel finish BTW. The real issue is what color would you really be happy with? Paint it that color. Good luck.

I just helped a friend sell a 914 that was painted a VW color called Tornado Red...awesome color! Whatever you decide, go with body color bumpers, it's pretty unique and makes the car look a little longer and more cohesive.

I just went throught this and decided on Signal Orange color change from black. Black is a good color but SO was the color of my 1st 914.

You also have many choices for the top, sail panels, rocker panels, etc. if you go with anything other than black.

I always wanted to do it yellow, but I've got two yellow cars already.

the 914 configuration helped and I think I have made a decision the best way to show it is on the car I have always liked and the color as well.

I got a estimate for a higher end 2 stage base and clearcoat all materials for just under $700 does this seem reasonable?

Just about any color looks good on these cars when it's a fresh paint job. Black looks more aggressive, IMHO.

My vote is for red. Was it originally Bahia Red?

The best quality (solid color, very high in pigment) paint and activator were, last time I checked, going to run about $800 to $1200 with some other stuff like the sandpaper etc. To me these cars look best in solid colors rather than metallic/pearl, which is harder to patch anyway.

If you used a good primer, you already know the cost of materials. . a gallon of DP40 and hardener and thinner was around 200 Bucks 2 year ago . as for color, it's no secret RED is the most expensive color. . Major brand quality RED paint is at $500 for all the components. . I look at it this way, the hard part is all the work you already did to get the body ready, and the labor to do a quality job. . . don't skimp on the quality of the materials used. . . this is something you really don't want to do wrong, then have to re-strip and repaint. .

Color is a personal choice. . but I'll never own a black car again.
Poor prep can make the best paint job look crappy . . . but even the best prep can't help a poor painter. . it all needs to be done right.

I really like stock colors

I've owned so many color change cars that I've grown to hate fighting them... and who knows... it may be old age... but I'm liking the idea of going stock these days...

so my vote counts for nothing.
but I vote red
