BTW I've successfully pressed the throw out bearing apart, cleaned and regreased them, then pressed them back together.
At the price they are, this is now worth doing.

That's a good idea... didn't know that was possible. I have one that came out of an engine that sat outside for a long time. When it was in the car it was far from quiet, so I swapped back to the other one I had. I might try to disassemble that one and see what all the commotion is.
