I have to offer for sale two separate 1.7L cases that I have line bored. I have cut the cylinder spigots to clean them up. The oil plugs have been removed and tapped for pipe plugs, (I have aluminum AN Galley plugs available for an additional charge) The price also includes a new set of +0.50MM Mahle main bearings for the case/crank combination offered as well.

Perhaps if I explained the situation better then there might be more interest in these cases. Last Year when I was building my wife's 914 the motor needed to be line bored, now before semi-retirement I built Rolls Royce Merlin V-12 engines and large Curtiss Wright 18 Cylinder radial engines for unlimited airplane racing. The tooling available that I was looking at was in my opinion substandard for the result I wanted. Even well known Type IV builders regarding line boring the Type IV case suggested finding one that did not need to be line bored. So as I did with the aircraft engines when a challenge came along, I studied the process, looked at what was being done and what it was going to take to get the result I wanted to achieve. So I made a new boring bar out of very stable linear way tool steel I made it as large as possible allowing the best available 90 degree cutting plane, Hard chromed the wear areas, used the highest quality indexable carbide boring tooling available and built a new bar with tapered expandable colletts on each end to locate the bar accurately. The total run-out on each of the expandable colletts was less than .0001 thousandths of an inch. I have done several cases up to this point with excellent results. I thought possibly it was time to explain this, and perhaps you will all understand the reason for the pricing. I also made the tooling for cutting the cylinder registers while torqued to a plate so the torque stresses are correct for those areas also.
(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads_offsite/i1013.photobucket.com-14690-1402414890.1.jpg) The tooling laid into a case to show it's fitment. |

Damn nice looking work John! Once word of your case work gets out there I suspect you'll end up with enough to keep quite busy.
Having done plenty of case work myself I can attest to how precise the tooling and practices need to be to end up with quality work. I quit offering case work to the public a couple of years ago as did Raby because it just takes so much time away from our primary business. Glad to see that someone has made a serious effort to fill the void. These old cases need more attention now than ever. |

Len, Thank You for the kind words, I do try to treat each operation the same way I treated the engines I built that lived their lives off the ground. I treat them like the owners lives depended on them functioning correctly. You and Raby leaving the case work behind is why I decided to step in. John |

Bumping these two cases back to the top, I know it's getting into the winter engine building season for guys that want to get their cars back on the road by spring.
I'll also be offering to do Your cases on the Vendor thread so keep me in mind. I am also currently developing the tooling to do the 356 Cases as well. John |

John,
I don't need a case but if I did I think this is an exceptional value. Case machined to the correct bearing size, crank and bearings included... deal. We have a 912 engine that may need your service. It's still in the car but were suspect it's hurt. |
