I am interested in a solution for creating a decent muffler by using my recently purchased Bursch Header/Muffler setup to best feature the new and improved sounds that will emanate from the rear of my (newly built) 2.2L 914.
Recently, I purchased a new-in-box Bursch system that was supposed to be Street Quiet.... - but it isn't close to "street quiet" even on my 1.7 engine as it is presently in the car. My approach is lop off the muffler-can on the Bursch product, then splice in a Magnaflow or other real live tuned muffler-element, then add the outlet pipe to match my valance contours. Size matters. The add-on needs to clear the underside heat shield as I do not want to cook my lovely wife's unmentionables while touring the California Coast..... : Sidebar: My pal on 914W Larmo has the Bursch system on his 1.7 and it has a totally different and very decent sound as installed / right out of the box / - and it was purchased in Pasadena from the same supplier / maybe my system did not have the "street-Quiet" can welded to it but his is clearly different and decently throaty but not raspy in sound - both on 1.7 stock FI engines..... not sure what gives.. Do any out there have a recommendation for a replacment insert-piece (Magnaflow, or other) to gain a decent amount of muffling while featuring a throaty tune that will respect the neighborhood while mildly inflating the ego of the driver (me) while at the same time, eliminate the sneers, recoil, and window-slams of the neighbors............ Follow up post regarding replacing my Bursch muffler with a Magnaflow using the Bursch collector and tip. I used a Magnaflow 11124 from Summit Racing for $87 - I found it even cheaper…. The Magnaflow size was very close to the Bursch, only issue was the tip now protrudes an inch or so less which is fine - always thought the Bursch tip was too long. Also I'm running a 2056 with dual Webers. |

I did exactly what you are thinking once my first bursch rusted from the inside out.
I just went to autozone with measurements and bought one that had the inlets and outlets in the right place. I recall the oval muffler needs a strategicly placed dent in it on the side to fit the bursch header thingy....just like bursch did. rich |

I bought the largest Dynomax turbo muffler that would fit.
It is also glass packed and sounds great. It is much bigger than what came with the Bursch and took a little dimpling with a hammer and pipe to clear the header. |

My first Bursch, on the car when I bought it, was raspy but attributed it to it's internally rusty state. The new Bursch was also raspy, thus the Magnaflow swap - a slight bit of rasp but not very noticeable. The overall sound is deeper and more throaty. |

The MagnaFlow came in to my place in Laguna inone day from NV / Summit and was a perfect fit after whacking off 1.5 inches of the tail-pipe end to line up with my rear valance.
The muffler needed no ballpeen adjustments to slide onto the Bursh pipeworks and fits neatly within the space provided in the stock 914 heat shield arrangement. The sounds now emanating from my tiny wisp of a 1.7 engine is 150% better, less raspy, more throaty, more manly, and mainly more tolerable by all humans, cats and dogs within earshot of the re-teener. Now for the wait time to evolve further for the 2.2L build to complete....... that should redefine throaty and manliness....... I want to make the same mod. The Magnaflow website states the 11124 is made of stainless steel. The Bursch pipes are steel I believe. Was it difficult to weld. Any recommendations on type of weld, rod filler, etc?

The welding was the easy part. On my 71, I have the snow-shovel rear valence so I wanted to line up the tail pipe precisely with the existing valence-hole. I sliced off 1.75 inches of the exit-side of the pipe then mated the muffler with the Bursch header(?) assembly then inserted the Bursh tail pipe / then mounted the whole assembly to align all three pieces. The fit is good and tight so I was able to tap each piece into alignment, then bring up the valence to confirm the hole-shot, then remove the muffler and pipe assembly as one unit, put it on my work bench and weld it up. I used my Lincoln wire-feed (no gas required) and found that the muffler metal was softer than the Bursh pieces. Continuous welds around the two pipe connections were completed. The an adjustment to the supporting tab on the tail pipe was made for its new relationship to the MagnaFlow muffler was welded into place.
I bolted it up to the car, fired it up and two of my neighbors popped out of their bunkers, brought over bottles of wine, and listened to the music. |

Thanks and Hey Lars: How bout we install my sway bar in the next few days... I am firing up my sandblaster and spray booth to get the parts and pieces together in install-shape. Maybe next weekend pluck the tank and get going??.. Cost of education: One bottle of cheap red and one better I am planning a trip to phoenix in the teener to pick up my side-shift and want that feature for the ride?? Pino Grigio for my CPA....
