Was driving last week and the generator light came on, went off, came on again, and then it stayed on.

Belt is on, VR was swapped with another I have around (and another is on the way), ground at the tranny is connected and good, battery charged and tightened, fuses 8 & 9 are good and new, spun to make sure they are connected.

Voltage meter is showing 12 to 13.

Anything else I can troubleshoot before I pull the generator? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

Check the voltage at the battery using a DVOM. Should be about 12-12.5V with the car off and about 13.5-14.2 with the car running.

If the voltage is low with the car running, then either the regulator or the alternator are bad.

Check the voltage at the battery with the engine running. It should be 14+ volts. It looks like you have eliminated most everything but that.

Thanks guys. The battery is coming through at 12.2 off and running at idle 13.65. Does that mean it's charging?

IF the voltage is higher when running you have charge,do a load test, lights on ,stereo on,fan blower on max.................... this will tell you whats really happening, don't trust the amps gauge, put your meter directly on the battery, good luck.

With the lights on and wipers going (no radio currently) at idle, I'm getting 11.8 on the battery.

What does it read when you rev the engine above idle?

Test the wire after the vr back to the light. Is this the wire that has a resistor in it near the gauge?

Will do. I'm going to test the alternator I just pulled out today.

Good used off a working motor. Maybe 1000 miles. Old Bosch part circa 2001.

Here's the one I pulled. Looks like the boot melted. Is this normal? Or a sign of failure?

A melted boot, thus heat, may be a sign of increased resistance from a bad connection. It's possible the large wire connection there was rusty or not very good. I'd clean all that up, ensure a nice clean connection, ensure a good solid wire ring end, use some dieletric grease and see how well it works.

only my 2c. If Voltage is correct an it is so. Alternator, Battrey and Voltage Reg. is OK.
There can only be a whiring, maybe ground, issue with the Light.
