In 2006 I teamed up with Renegade Hybrids to build what would be, in my mind, the ideal 914 with a modern powerplant. I immediately put them to work in locating a suitable donor replacement and they found a great three-owner Nevada-plated 1974 Olympic Blue 914 in March 2006. At that time the car had approximately 80,000 miles on the chassis. Renegade subsequently pulled the original 2.0 engine and sourced the turbocharged EJ20 engine from a 2004 Subaru WRX with approximately 30K miles. In addition to items related to the engine swap itself, Renegade also performed extensive work on the suspension and brakes (both sourced from a 911), transmission, exterior, and interior. After the hardware was complete I also worked with Subaru-tuning specialists Crawford Performance to dial in the engine behavior with a custom ECU tune. In July/August 2008 the car was handed off to Jerry Woods Enterprises (JWE) for some further development. This included custom water/brake/fuel lines and a “964-style” center tunnel cover. The build sheet in my blog covers all the major items. Since delivery I’ve enjoyed countless weekend drives through the twisties, have had lots of fun driving the car in local PCA and 914 club rallies, and the car has even been able to flex its muscle at the occasional autocross or track day. The car’s odometer currently reads 95K, so only approximately 15K miles have been put on the car since the conversion. There are no accidents to report and no expense has been spared to keep it in top shape and it has been serviced by only the best local Porsche and Subaru specialist shops. Recent service has been completed by Don’s Autowerks in Campbell, CA and engine service by Subaru specialist Garage One in San Jose, CA. New tires have also been installed. Driving this car at speed through the twisties is an experience unlike any other. It has the handling qualities of a well-sorted 914 with the sound and acceleration of a Group B rally car. I will certainly miss this combination as well as the aesthetically understated and “sleeper” nature of the car. While Subaru-based 914 hybrids are not uncommon I feel that it is uncommon to find ones that have been prepared to this level, all the while striking a balance of outright performance and street drivability. My only reason for selling is that I’ve started a new chapter with a 2004 Boxster S and I can’t find a way to fit four cars in a three car garage. I'm listing the car here first in order to give my 914World friends the "first crack" at it before I list it on other sites. Over $60K invested; asking $30K cash/cashier's check. I have driven Tom’s car in the past. We swapped for my old 6 conversion.
For one this car is pristine and a total sleeper but for two the WRX motor is a total beast. Having owned two water cooled 914’s in the past, I can say this car does not have corners cut in the build like many others. It’s hard to find a conversion car that is still a narrow body and not flashy about its power. Good luck Tom, I wish I had the space. Oh, and if this is a 2006 WRX motor it’s a 2.5L (EJ255) |

Below is the updated build sheet. There are many small items regarding the conversion but this should cover the major items.
Engine • 2004 Subaru WRX EJ20 Turbo by Renegade Hybrids • Complete in-house conversion by Renegade Hybrids includes all necessary hardware: Custom engine cradle, cooling system, etc. • ECU tune by Crawford Performance Suspension/Chassis • 2,260 lbs (wet, without driver) • 911 Carrera front suspension with 22mm sway bar and Bilstein strut inserts • Turbo tie rods • Bilstein rear sport shocks with adjustable perches and 200 lb springs • Battery relocation to frunk • Wheel well vents to allow airflow through radiator • Extensive development work by Jerry Woods Enterprises, including 964-style chassis tunnel modification • FUCHS 6x16 (911) and 7x16 (951) with 205/55 front and 225/50 rear Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires Transmission • Stock rebuilt 914 (type 901) side shift transmission • 9" flywheel with Kevlar clutch disc and stage two 9” pressure plate • RennShift shifter • Renegade high performance axles Brakes • 911SC calipers with 911SC rotors in the front, 914-6 rotors in the rear • 19MM master cylinder • Braided stainless steel brake lines Exterior • Custom modified front bumper and spoiler • Repaint in original Olympic Blue in 2006 • Roof smoothed and painted gloss black • Stretched rear fenders • GT-style engine cover and hood pins • Camp914 halogen fog lamps • Reverse-style “PORSCHE” graphics on both sides (removable) Interior • Custom GT seats • Custom triple gauge with boost gauge integrated into tachometer, powder coated instrument bezel rings, and blue backlighting • MOMO steering wheel with billet adapter • Custom rear storage carpeting and ECU mounting And here is the major service history. Anything that needed addressing has been addressed. As I've said, no expense has been spared. • Aug 2006 Renegade Hybrids in-house conversion complete ($24k) • July 2008 Development and final dialing-in by Jerry Woods Enterprises. Replaced water and brake lines, fabricate “964 tunnel”, many other items ($12k). • Mar 2010 Replace brake rotor/pads (Don’s Autowerks) • Apr 2014 Replace all rubber window and door seals, replace speedometer cable (Borelli Motorsports) • Nov 2014 Transmission replaced (Don’s Autowerks) • July 2018 Replace valve cover gasket, camshaft position and oxygen sensors and install resistor mod for EGT sensor (Garage One Subaru Workshop) • Aug 2018 Install steel braided oil return line and AN fittings (Garage One Subaru Workshop) • Aug 2018 General inspection and PPI completed (Don’s Autowerks) • Sep 2018 Repair small engine fuel leak (Garage One Subaru Workshop) • Jan 2019 New tires (4) |

Tom, do you know if the timing belt and water pump etc was serviced on the motor? Hi Matt, No, I don't know. I'm calling Garage One today to see if/when it is due; will advise. Hi Matt, I talked to the main wrench at Suby shop this morning. Subaru recommends belt replacement at 9yrs/90,000 miles. However, they felt that it was not necessary considering only 45,000 miles on the engine; i.e. mileage was the determinant factor. |
