As the 914 grows in popularity we could use something like this if it isn't crap.

Here's some reviews I've read:
"These things SUCK" "Don’t waste your money" "I tried it for a week, and not once did it find my car." |

I'm going to file that under pipe dream.
- Needs the app on many phones to locate the tag. - Doesn't say if it communicates via blutooth or wifi, which will need to be active on nearby phones that have the app. - No link to download the app, just to be helpful to others... Just the usual reasons Tech brains usually fail in business ventures. |

Did more clicking off site.
Range 300ft via blutooth, so if your dog gets out it will tell you the dog is within 300ft of your phone, because it uses the GPS in your phone. But then you can hit a finder button and the loud noise freaks out the dog and off you go chasing.... So currently worthless for your car. |

Don't need it. I haven't found anyone that can shift my 1971 rear shift (and that 's with all new bushings).

It doesn’t even really have to be a tail shifter to deter thieves. Although my 3 daughters can drive manuals, neither of my sons-in-law can.
Not saying that girls don’t steal cars too, but... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving-girl.gif) |

I taught my son how to drive my tail shifter when he first got his permit. After a couple drives around the block, I told him he can now drive most anything.

Kent,
Here is the issue with community GPS it relies on bluetooth, which then relies on saturation. And since they are going you a buy 3 get 2 free to the first 500 customers. The math just does not work, this product require saturation of epic proportions to make it work well. But hey, I play the startup game several times, and it can be a fun ride, but sometimes you have to walk away because in that environment people tend to drink the Kool-aid and well then go and mix up even more. Because of the Kool-aid drinking sometimes the R&D goes out the window, and well so does the very capable and educated engineers. I would run away, now I am also beating that if you wanted they will be happy to have you become an angel investor. |

I know there are some out there that have built in GPS and a cell subscription. So as long as it has cell reception you will know where your car is or at least the last communication before it lost cell reception. Amazon has a bunch of brands that use cell. I am also trying to figure out which is the best one.

I know this company pretty well - they are based here in San Diego. They also had an ICO that raised a bunch of money a couple years ago.

All those tags work the same way and none really works well.
They connect to your phone and the phone reports its location to a server. Your phone must run a special app for that. If you loose it, then maybe someone else with a phone with the same app will pass by and the tag will connect to that phone and report location. It can only work if almost everyone has that special app installed, the same that you have. In other words, it doesn't work since other tags have other apps. |

I bought a bunch of the TrackR® tags a few years ago. The theory behind the system sounded good, but for it to work optimally, a whole lot of folks need to have their tracking app active on their 'schmart fones'.
Best bet is one of the GPS type tracking systems, like LoJack®. The main downside is that you'll need to pay for cell service for the device. Another option is to just get another smart phone and leave it in your car, kept charged via the vehicle's battery or an additional hidden battery (in case a thief disconnects your main vehicle battery). Then you can use the 'find my phone' app to locate it. Licensed Amateur Radio operators can utilize a system called APRS to track their own vehicle's location on Google maps. There are a couple of companies that manufacture APRS tracking units that consist of a GPS receiver and transmitter in a small box powered by the vehicle' battery (or again an additional hidden battery). No cell service required. I have these in several vehicles. Here's an article about the most popular pet-type trackers ... https://gadgetsandwearables.com/2020/02/10/...-trackers-cats/ |

I have this one hidden. Paid 160 euro for it and 30 euro contract every 3 months. Works flawless. Batteries last weeks and the thing starts tracking as fm the moment the car moves or if you activate it through the app. You can see routes upto 30 days in the past. Also handy if you suspect your partner isn't telling the entire truth .... don't ask me how I know (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) This is no gadget like the tags they are selling bye Dax |
