In bugs you see it all the time, but I couldn't find any info on this over here. A modern radio hidden in the glovebox.

I like the look of the factory radio. But I also like to be able to make phone calls or stream some music now end then (besides the music from the engine) en have Waze guide me while driving.

So I would like to put a modern radio with BT in the glovebox.

Has anybody done this before? I tried some searches over here but couldn't find anything. Any pics or wiring info would be appreciated.

It's quite a reach, and there's little reason for a DIN head unit these days—what with Waze, Pandora, music libraries on smartphones, etc.

Several years ago, I ditched my head unit entirely and added a factory defroster switch to my dash to arm/disarm my amp. I plugged my phone into a cable that went to a Pyle EQ in the glovebox and then controlled volume via the phone—which worked well once the EQ's volume was in the right range. My next setup will have a Bluetooth receiver for audio (and possibly but probably not phone). Don't know if I'll do a wired hookup, as the connectors keep changing and it's a PITA unless you embrace the dongle. We'll see.

A friend has done something slicker still, converting his 912's cigarette lighter cap into a knob on a 5-function controller for his Bluetooth setup, and I think it even turns volume up and down.

It is really nice to not have to reach across the interior to adjust the volume or change the song...even the stock radio location is less than optimal in this regard—one of those moments when you realize just how wide a 914 is, and how spacious.

Sounds good! I like that option, thing is, I've already got the head unit laying around here from another car. So I would like to go that route first. Although I do like the idea! Might consider it.

If you can hear your radio great. A sound system to me has always been last on my list. I am too busy listening to every sound the car makes. Besides the added level of noise in the car. Specially with the top off. Maybe blue tooth for hands free with an ear phone would be nice.

Years ago people used to butcher the glove box and install bandit radios, eight track players, cb radios, cassette players, equalizers, amps, and I have even seen a short wave radio installed there!!

These days with the modern radios that do everything perfectly on one small DIN sized package, there is no reason to use the glove box except for the owners manual packet and gloves. Panasonic for one (as well as Porsche ) has recently made some retro looking radios that fit perfectly, look tasteful and do everything that one would want them to do. ALSO the restored original Blaupunkt Frankfurt radios come with an ipod connector that will let you do bluetooth or plug in your phone

I've thought about and even designed a radio placement for my car with a custom interior.

In the end I think I have decided to simply forgo the radio and stick to some bluetooth earbuds. I spent $100 total about 3 months ago for 3 different sets and liked them all. A mount for your phone and some earbuds are just about all you need now adays. Besides, if I want some music it helps muffle the engine noise and make a long drive more enjoyable.

For me the reason is I want the radio looking stock. I don't want a modern din radio in there. Even when it looks 'classic'. Because with the LCD's in there they just don't look that classic to me.

Also I've got a fairly recent stereo here. So it would same wasteful to just go and buy another one.

I guess I'll just mount in in there and figure wiring out. Cant be to hard. Just splice into the original factory radio.

I've done this many times. This was the trick in the old days. You'd have to hide your speakers & power amplifier too. Everything had to be out of sight.

You could add this Bluetooth receiver to the console: it’s very small and has pre-outs for an amp. It is 2 3/16” diameter.

I installed a bluetooth amp designed for a boat and just use my phone. Not that I can hear it over the engine...

Nowadays all you need is a cable going to and amp and your phone. I'd like to see if someone on here has relocated the defroster to the right and used the existing hole for the radio.
