I am moving my fuel pump from an up front location to a better up front location. The PO ran the power wire through a hole in the passenger foot well. I don't like that idea. Is there a better option that routes from the fuse box to in or around the steering rack area?

How about the hole for the brake master cylinder switch wire? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer3.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer3.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer3.gif) That comes through the firewall as part of a big bundle of wiring harness. Then if I recollect properly it dives into the fuel tank well and through a grommet out as a single wire or pair of wires. A reasonable route. The two key thoughts that I have is to used a fused circuit that is hot when ignition is on, and to properly protect the wire. The hole through sheet metal needs a rubber grommet. |

If you need a new grommet, get one & cut the wall at 45 degrees. Then open it up & slip it over the wiring. Then shove it in the hole in the sheet metal.

When moving the fuel pump up front, I follow the wiring harness that is already in the car. You don't have to run two wires all the way from the back. Just one Black/yellow wire to extend the factory wire, and run it up to the front until it goes under the tank. Add a second ground wire from the ground point by the fuse block to where your pump is mounted.
In my opinion, anything else looks sloppy. |

FYI...
The factory 1975-76 cars used a single black/red stripe equivalent to 12 gage wire from the relay board to the fuel pump in the front tank well, and a separate 12 gage brown cable to a lug welded to the chassis in the tank well. Just extending the original 17 gage black/red wire from the original engine firewall location is a problem, insufficient ampacity. Relocating then FP more forward than the front tank well increases a fire problem risk in a front end crash. Attached thumbnail(s) ![]() |

This is a 74 with a 6 in it. Was originally on the engine firewall. PO moved it to a crude location near the steering rack but poorly done. I am making it better in a very similar location. Wiring should be better as previously noted and I will be able to put the steering rack cover on without bending it and forcing it on.

I have carbs, which for me left one of the fuel lines available as a conduit for an extension wire from the rear and drops you out right at the tank. Obviously won’t work if you kept the FI.

There are headlight wires.
Open hood, follow those wires under the cowl, just above the fuse panel….a grommet or two there will have room. |
