Does anyone have a different trunk support then gas struts? I am thinking of a simple single rod style older cars had for the engine hood support. I have searched the site and haven't found any results other then gas struts.

The pre-production prototypes had a simple prop rod for both the trunk lid and the engine lid.

Only problem is the lids are heavy and make the rear lid hang crooked when it’s up.

Only problem is the lids are heavy and make the rear lid hang crooked when it’s up. That was my concern. An option to prevent that is having the pivot on the actual hood near the middle and angle down to the tail area possibly (this option may be difficult to do with the roof installed though) Another option is having one on each side similar to the gas struts locations. |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) Looks like you can still access it with the roof installed as well... Any pictures of the rod end that touches the bottom of the rear trunk? Is their a slot for the rod or is it rubberized to grip? |

Stock is a pretty elegant solution.

Ski pole works well… Or these… https://www.thoro-tec.de/en/p/hood-holding-...ack-porsche-914 https://www.thoro-tec.de/en/p/bonnet-holding-rod-porsche-914 Or adjustable hiking poles...or a broken plastic handle from on old car washing brush which is current set up... It appears to just have been a pin that rests in a hole in the deck-lid frame. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/popcorn[1].gif) |

Without some way of "locking" it in the upright position to the trunk lid I wouldn't trust it.
Imagine a gusty day. Sort of like a giant mouse trap! The possibility of bending the lid over time would worry me as well. |

I like this idea for both front and rear lids, and have considered it on a number of occasions, just never pursued the idea beyond a though or two. I'd be surprised if a stock setup already in use from some other car mfg. couldn't be incorporated to work with the 914. Nissan comes to mind.. I've had a D21 pickup and a more recent Rogue that both had these kinds of hood supports. The roof storage (procedure) is the problem as someone else has pointed out, unless mounting the support rod on one of the sides... I'm not sure the lid sitting crooked is all that much of an issue, since you never have the thing open for very long - least i wouldn't. Let us know what you come up with, if you do it.
This 911 front prop rod might be made to work on the rear of the 914: https://www.tiporscheproducts.com/product-p...-fiber-prop-rod ..and the 914-6 GT front prop rod style set ups are available on-line from various sources. They are obviously, normally used with the fiberglass GT hoods, but I doubt that's necessary. |

The torsion bars seem to cause issues in the long run with the hinge area, and they're difficult/dangerous to remove/install. A simple prop is easier to install and replace if needed. |

I am planning on using a stick, but I have been a carpenter for 50+ years.
Will try 3/4"x2" and report back |

I had to remove the T bars when i installed a MFI engine for clearance. I have a really cool bespoke high tech Carbon fiber support with padded ends.
Reality: Found a golf club with head broken off and added a cover on broken end. Light weight and functional. I am planning on using hydraulic lifts on my current build ( have kit in box). Not a fan of the T bars. John |
