We had our 914 LS2 track car out this weekend and shredded two clutch discs in a matter of a few laps each time.
We just replaced the 4-speed 930 trans with a 6-sp Boxster S trans and had high hopes for some fun. Sadly, the first (almost new) clutch failed spectacularly, with shredded friction material inside the Bell housing… interestingly, only the pressure plate side was gone. As in completely missing. The flywheel side looks fine. Replaced it with a spare and it didn’t last. Haven’t taken it apart again, but suspect the same thing. I’m guessing the custom clutch disc is a fraction too big and rubbing on something on the PP side. Any ideas? Some pictures for your amusement: |

Imma guess the disc isn't touching the flywheel because you put it on backwards.

Theer,
Can you provide details regarding the flywheel, clutch disc, and pressure plate? Meaning, Brand and serial / model # for each? There literally hundreds of choices for this combination, and general info / or type does not really work when trying to sort failure issues. Thx |

Is the main shaft riding correctly in the pilot bearing?

Thanks everyone- pretty sure we put it in correctly both times, but will verify.
EJM might be onto something… the only change was the Boxster trans replaced the 930 trans, clutch, PP are the same. Could be the Boxster input shaft is too short… or the pilot bearing (which was fine for the 930) is too big for the Boxster end. I’ll report back once we have it apart again. |

I tried to zoom in on the input shaft but the Pic got blurry. In the blurry photo the end of the shaft look rough. Maybe just the photo.

I would be very interested in seeing the flywheel and adapter you are using for the Boxster swap. I looked for a build thread but did not see one.
