Hey everyone! Soon I will have to get some pics for you all and share more details regarding my 6 conversion, but for now I had some questions for my specific example.
I have a 1970 914, so it came with the 1.7 of course. I am working on putting in a 2.7l from a 1974 911. It originally had CIS, but I am opting to switch over to carbs. The engine is complete with its factory harness and I am wondering what I will need to buy or do in order to get the engine correctly hooked up to what it needs to. Either direct connection to main harness or using the relay board as a way in joining connections. From what I understand I won't need half the stuff on the engine harness, or relay board and also the pins are all different. I am going with a 6AL box, carbs, high vol low pressure fuel pump. I would like to keep it as simple as possible or as cheap as possible, if you can have 1 with the other in this scenario. Please let me know what needs to be done! I tried searching around and found some stuff but nothing that really helped for my uses. Any links for business or guides would be appreciated, thank you! |

I had the same setup in my Irish 6, with a CIS 2.7. I can send you photos etc.. of what the plug from the engine harness needs to be setup for the relay board. It is pretty simple actually. Some wires remain in place (the yellow starter solenoid etc..).
You can also use a more modern alternator with an internal voltage regulator and eliminate the exterior regulator on the relay board. Very simple to do. I have photos, diagrams etc.. and can essentially walk you through that. I have weber triples, but was even running a Holley Sniper at one point. I had an MSD 6AL box, but find that running a 1,2,3 ignition is all it needs as the MSD seems to eat up the rotors... you need a rotor without the resistor to make it work well. Other than that, it is pretty bullet proof. Rob Hey everyone! PM sent. I'm in the midst of the exact same project, albeit with a 3.0 liter. As Ben says, Perry will build you exactly what you need.
I can't say enough kind things about him. |

I found a used one, cheap and did a few mods, worked perfect. They are quite simple
Good call with the 6AL box Are you running an alternator with a built in regulator? |

My six came with a loom but all chopped up ,went via Timmy2 on Pelican then he mentioned not really his thing as his pinout board wasn't set up to reman a replacement , Perry built me a great loom to my spec and no regrets however not sure he is doing them currently so worth checking with him about that. Cheers. |

Thanks for all the guidance everyone! Its got an externally regulated alternator... I assume. Never pulled anything to 2x check that. I guess I should. Do I just remove the shroud and check? I would put money that its externally regulated. I shot Perry an email the other day and someone messaged me his number. I'll give him a few days to respond, otherwise will give him a call.

I would be interested! I am more or less ready to pull the trigger once I hear back. I can reference to Perry that you would be interested and see if he is wanting to do that. |

I'll be in the same boat here when my '71 comes back from its spa treatment. What is perry's screen name or contact info?
TIA. |

I’m at this stage of my 3.0 project as well ( I wonder how many 914-6 conversions are out there). The only engine harness decision I still have to make is whether to retain the relay board. The only reason I would want to keep it is for the fuel pump 5 second shut off feature. I believe it is controlled at the rb but I could be wrong. Does anyone know how that works and if a relay could be set up closer to the fuel tank where I’m moving the fuel pump?

Similar boat here, I'd like to skip the board to clean up that area of the engine bay, guess I'm forced to go internally regulated alternator...? Since I'm going carbs that's the only thing holding me back from cutting it out completely. |

Not a bad idea to go with a new alternator anyways if yours has some age on it. Mine was last rebuilt in 1995! So I paid the price and bought one from Pelican.

Thats what i did, got rid of the board, newer alternator with internal reg. The old was 55 amps to 70 amps with regulator. It is a little longer so I had to have 9mm milled off inside of early fan housing, not a big deal for my machine shop. Mark

Just to clarify you can run an external regulator alternator you just have to find a spot to mount it. The relay board gets in the way of everything as far as I am concerned

Used a new alternator with internal regulator a few bits from an original /6 engine harness and fabricated the rest, Super easy retained the regulator board for simplicity |

What's the current go-to for alternator. I have an old one currently, but my engine is being built, so now's the time to swap. Future-proofing for more power needs is a good idea too...
