Hello,

Can an aftermarket external oil tank be installed in the factory 6 location without removing the Type 4 engine in a 1973 914?

I would like to do all the conversion work that I can before dropping the engine.

Thanks!

Possibly... I don't know if you will have room enough under the car for the return line.
You would need to remove the relay board and heater fan to make room. Easy to take in and out. Put a towel over the motor due to the shavings. Most of us dump the relay board when converting to a six. You can make your own engine harness or purchase one.

Drilling the holes would be a challenge with any engine in the 914. Trying to picture a drill with that 4inch-ish hole bit leaning over into the small engine bay access.

I would rather drill the holes with engine out.

I would remove the engine for easy access, did mine a year or so ago. I also am running an alternator with the internal regulator. Seemed to make things easier and I kept the relay board. Fabricating a wiring harness was straight forward with the alternator/regulator combo

Keep us posted with your progress, it will be a journey

Can you imagine the wrist of the person trying to punch the 4.5” hole saw through leaning over the side of the car?

OP it’s not safe to punch the holes in the chassis with the engine in.

I agree with Ben.... it would be dangerous to your physical well being....

The shavings will go everywhere you don't want them.

You wont drill straight.

You lose control of it when it punches through and could damage something else.

If you are doing a swap, the oil tank is the easy part. Really. Motor out, drill holes, fit tank through fender when the wheel is off, bolt it up with lines already in place. Done.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) Pre fitting the tank really won't save you any time. Especially if you are welding in a bulkhead engine mount. Just do it all at once and have the space to do it right. You may need ss fuel lines. Again, tons easier to do with the engine out. Some people remove the stock 914-4 engine mounts. You don't have to but just depends on how far you want to go. The right side mount is often hiding rust.
