Many cars back then didn’t come with anti-roll bars standard. Was often necessary to add a heavy duty suspension or sport suspension option to get anti-roll bars.
Per the picture, that car is still doing a heck of a job. Look at the outside front tire and compare that to what you would get out of a 1970’s Chevrolet. |

Look closely and you will see the pile of dirt he was driving over at 2 mph For sure this picture isnt of a car cornering at speed. Zero compression on the outer front strut and the massive amount of steering input... A 914 lifting like that without assistance would have that outer wheel crammed WAY up in that fender well |

The discussion of how the different cars look while taking different corners at different speeds while cornering is moot.
Not putting bars on entry level vehicles was very common in the 60s & 70s. The 914 was an entry level sports car comparable to MG’s, Triumph, and the Fiat X1/9. It definitely was not allowed to compete with the 911! To say that there is no excuse for not putting anti roll bars on the car is similar to saying there was no excuse for offering a 1.7L with only 80 Hp. Do bars help control body roll? Of course they do!! Yet, we still have guys on this very forum that refuse to tune body roll with bars and instead use springs with crazy rates. Cars are built to a price point. They often launch with less feature content and less weight than they end up with at the end of their lifecycle. The 914 was no different. |

I've had great enjoyment from the handling of many 914s that had no sway bars and one that had them. I have a set for the one I am building now, but not sure if I will put them in or not. I'll have to see how it feels with weight of my current fat self and the 6 I am working on before I decide. Bigger front calipers probably come first.

Mark Thanks Mark, If you had told me when I bought the car for $2500 that I would put more than the purchase price in suspension, I would have been shocked. The car begs for corners. Say what you will about Brad Roberts, I did exactly what he told me on the suspension. I bounced it off McMark and Eric Shea and they agreed. The suspension is tunable, but since the original corner balance I have not had reason to change a thing. |
