ever wondered about the "donuts" on the bottom of your car? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)
please excuse the poor quality of the picture, the original is HUGE and way too big for my scanner, so i pieced it together out of 4 scans ... the four round "donuts" on the bottom of your car (one on each corner) were used to hang the car from the ceiling on the assembly line! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif) Orientation Corrected! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) This post has been edited by McMark: Nov 15 2006, 08:57 PM |

That's very cool.
that's funny, I alway's thought I got "donuts" on the bottom of my car from driving through the back alley behind that coffee shop after the "day olds" were tossed out. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/chairfall.gif) great picture. i like those assembly line shots. i really do. KT |

Interesting picture, thanks SirAndy (IMG:style_emoticons/default/clap56.gif)
It's curious to see the car in the foreground doesn't have side marker lights, whereas the 914 on the line immediately behind it does (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) . I'd think they'd build all the same spec cars as a "batch". This pic also belongs on the concours forum so those guyz can see the finish in the wheel wells and on those brake calipers. |

Interesting picture, thanks SirAndy i've got a big version too, 3796 pixel x 2555 pixel. also got the photoshop .psd file ... the original is from DGVWPB, but the format is way too big for my scanner ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Andy |

The first car also has "euro" signal markers. Does the second have the solid "usa" ambers?

The first car also has "euro" signal markers. Does the second have the solid "usa" ambers? nope, checked on that as well, the other ones in the line all have sidemarkers *and* euro blinkers. it seems they were not for the US market after all. maybe some of the other european countries had sidemarkers as well? actually, the BIG one in the rear trunk, slightly off to the right side, towards the front of the car, that one is removable and there's a "cup" that fits in there to make room for some parts only used on the sportomatic cars ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) Andy |

Were they anticipating a lot of sportos to be made? probably not, but it's easier to have them all stamped the same, that way, you don't have to make different tooling for the sportocars or cut them by hand. same reason why all /4 cars have the stamped areas for the /6 oiltank, even thought less than 3% of all 914s were /6s ...
