My son and I were running an errand. The rain clouds looked at least an hour away so I took the teener. Well, I'm no meteorologist. Five minutes in and the rain starts. Within a minute it's coming down hard, real hard.
A couple of things I noted driving with the top off and the windows down in the rain: 1) your interior will get wet, especially near the backpad; 2) the faster you drive, the drier you'll be; 3) damn it's fun! I think at faster speeds with the windows up, you could stay quite comfortable. Anyways, after a few minutes I pulled into a parking lot under a tree and put the top on. The 6 year old thought the whole thing was pretty funny. |

Yep windows up , top off steady speed, no stops, you will not feel a drop. the most fun is the look on other peoples face as you go by Gary |

I caught the same storm! Was on 391 heading towards Holyoke(always dark clouds over Holyoke) in my 911 Targa. Nice & dry @ 65 and it was pouring. Would of been in the teener, but my mystery battery let go this morning. Have a new Optima in it now. Dude, I drove from Knoxville, TN to Chattanooga in a downpour with the top off and never got wet (over 100 miles). A very cool 914 experience

I've yet to drive in the rain with the top off, but I do remember driving in the dead cold of winter with the top off windows up and heater on. The top of your head stays chilly but everything else is warm. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) This is California winter though... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

Well they say if you don't like the weather in New England just wait a minute. Went to Home Depot with my daughter a couple of weeks ago. Few clouds around but mostly sunny. In the store 5 minutes when we hear rain pounding on the roof. Sitting in a parking lot it does get wet inside. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)
Was on 391 heading towards Holyoke(always dark clouds over Holyoke) maybe not clouds... couple of times a week the news starts with "Another fire overnight in Holyoke..." (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

I can't wait to have these experiences myself! (well, not necessarily driving in the rain, but having similar 914 moments as well).
This thread made me smile. Pete . |

Rich You're kidding right? I do want to drive it in the snow at least once (before the salt gets laid down). Once we had the top on, it continued to rain hard for another 5 minutes but the inside stayed dry. Who knew? When we got to our destination, it hadn't rained there. When I got back home, it hadn't rained there either. And I went maybe 10 miles each way. Oh, and RainX rules! |

It's a pretty good way to clean up the interior real quick too. Keep a towel in the trunk to wipe off the rain that does get inside. BTDT.

About 10 years ago I had just finished restoring my 73 2.0. I had just gotten it back from the paint shop & she was pretty. My family was at the coast & I had to meet them. I decided to take my car as I haden't driven it much yet. Only a 45 minute trip to the coast typically. So I get there without a problem. I had been there about 2 hours. I'm just having dinner & watching the ocean. I see something funny. Holy Crap it is snowing (IMG:style_emoticons/default/WTF.gif) . After a half hour there is a good 6" on the beach. I've never seen snow on the coast. About time for me to leave & get back to work. Then it hits me I'm in my teener. Turns out my 45 minute drive home took 3 hours. Hardly got out of 1st gear as people were driving like $hit. I'm stressed as hell as I am sure someone is going to hit me. Defrost works like crap. I spent the drive half leaning over to look out the little half moon of clear window above the defrost vent. I was tense the whole time. I made it home without a problem. I was litteraly exhausted though (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

The day after I got my drivers liscense, it poured. Of course, after a year of working on the 914, I had to take it to school that day. I was hoping the rain would hold off, and it did, right up until around 10:00. I hurriedly asked my teacher to use the restroom and ran outside to the school parking lot and through a towel over the motor. (No Rain tray with dual IDF's) I then threw the rain tray on top of the towel, and closed the engine lid as far as it would go. What a pain in the ass..
There was one day when I was caught with the top off late at night when it was around 50 deg outside cloud cover. I was coming back from Carlsbad where it was warm, and clear... rolled the windows up, and no water got in.. By the time Imade it back to vista it had cleared up.. It was exciting seeing the rain spray go over the windshield with the top off though. Something every 914 driver should experience... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lol-2.gif) |

I had mine in the rain a few months ago, dam weather lady said no rain till late. I drove to SF (when my fuel pump fell off) and on the way back it started coming down. I thought no problem, I'll be on the lower deck of the bay bridge, should stay reasonable. Wrong, the upper deck drains to the lower deck in these nice little waterfalls every 50 ft or so, right down the middle of the car. I had the top on, so that was good, but I still had to open the doors and blow a fan through the car when I got home.
Good times. |

Sound like I really need to finish the magnet sheets to cover the engine bay vent. I have the prototype sticker done, just need to order the magnet sheet!
