My last post was some time back regarding switching my Dells to Webers. I finally decided to go with new Webers and could not be happier. After my engine rebuild the car just never would run out right with the Dells and the new Webers fired up right out of the box!
I've tuned the carbs and they run strong through all the gears. The only thing is they have an extremely strong smell/fumes from the exhaust. Is this normal or do I have them running to rich? I did not want to keep making adjustments since it is running great. I know it smelled some with the Dells but this is very strong. I got out this evening to check the tire pressure and it just burned my eyes when I got around to the back side of the car. Also, I did add an octane booster so this could possibly be it. Thanks for your thoughts/help in advance. Regardless of the smell, I'm just happy that my little 74 is finally back on the road! |

Too much fuel can sap performance, cause increased exhaust temps, and wash the oil off the cylinder walls causing premature wear.
I'd invest in a wideband O2 sensor if I were you. Or at least spend $100 with a shop to check your idle emissions. These engines been a bit of a rich idle, but not excessively. |

I forgot to mention that I currently have the idle set around 1000rpm or just over at times. I was not 100% sure what it should be but it seemed to be a nice balance. Would this about right or running to high? Thank you... |

Depends on the cam and the motor combo. Anywhere from 750 to 1000 is pretty standard.
