I'm gonna be passing by Napa valley on my vacation in a couple of weeks. We'll be coming south from Humboldt Redwoods State Park on Hwy 101 and heading towards Big Basin State Park, just North of Santa Cruz. We're planning to go across the Golden Gate Bridge and make a stop in Redwood City at HPH to see Brad and pick up some parts.
We'd like to take in a little bit of Napa along the way. Mostly just a drive through, with a stop at 1 or 2 wineries. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a good route and perhaps some favorite wineries to visit. |

I think you'll enjoy it Ernie. Did that once. For some reason I can't remember the route? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/drunk.gif)

You will want HWY 37 from 101 to Napa. I'll get you more details later.
Ernie, if the planets align I *might* join you in Napa. I need to visit a 914 friend of mine who runs a winery management consultanting company. 1.Mondavi. Cool tour and plenty of tasting 2.Luis Martini 3.Berenger 4.Sterling http://www.napavalley.com/wineries/featured.html My friend with the consulting company has his own vineyard (grows enough grapes to pay his monster house payment) B |

We should probably try and do a 914club dinner in Napa.
There is a brewery on the very north end of the "trail" Nice place. I'll get the name later. It is mostly locals who eat there. B |

V. Sattui, Dean and Daluca, Artessa ( on the Lap and 5 mins from home )...Some of my favorites.
Vincent Arroyo in Calistoga is right near the brewery Brad mentioned. Also, "Downtown Joe's" in Napa has at least 8 excellant variety's brewed fresh on site at all times. Try the "Golden Thistle" or " Tail Waggin'" (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer.gif) Joe's might be the "Spot" as there is free parking on a roof top garage within sight. NIce park right next door along the Napa river. The menu is really great... I used to cook for them at least ten years ago. Fri Nights the local Chef's Market is also the favorite thing to do. |

Wow - great tips! I had not thought of a 914 get-together (duh!) I guess it was because I'll be in the VW Eurovan Camper (although it does sport a 914Club sticker).
We've got reservations at Big Basin for camping so we don't have too worry much about what time we get there. Our plan had been to stop in Redwood City on our way south on the 19th, but Big Basin is close enough that we could swing back on Tuesday the 20th if needed. We had figured on going through the Napa area in the early afternoon so I don't know how that will work for a get-together since it is a Monday. I may be on vacation, but I figure some of you will be working! Let me know if you've got ideas. |

Another good option is to go to AAA and get a map and guide. They've got a pretty good Wine Country map, covering Napa and Sonoma counties. Napa has two main roads that have the wineries on them, Highway 29 and Silverado Trail. Lots of good stuff there... I made up my own tour last year (damn, that long already?) by finding all the places that produced ports that I could and underlining them on the map. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Sonoma also has quite a few wineries. I know you'll pass through wine country on 101; some friends of mine have a winery just off 101 in Geyserville, and you'll be seeing vines on and off just about all the way into Santa Rosa. Or you can bail off 101 and take 128 at Geyserville, which should take you through to 29 at Calistoga. Or take 12 at Santa Rosa to get to Sonoma, then cut over... Lots of fun, prety roads in that area. Lots of vineyards. Lots to choose from. Of course, if you take 37 over to Napa you will go right past Sears Point. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Just don't try it this coming weekend, NASCAR is there and traffic will be beyond horrible. --DD |

QUOTE Maybe put the boat in the water? There is a little cafe there with a porch (excuse me) veranda that sits right next to the water. Food is wonderful. |
