i have recently purchased a 1976 porsche 914. it is currently at the mechanics getting a few things done to pass safety regs here....funny how no matter how glowing the account provided by the former owner some things are sometimes not what they should be. in any case i am wondering if there is a preferred manual to have for my own future ..shall we say..necessary adjustments that will crop up from time to time. all suggestions appreciated.

This one for sure. There are many others. Search for Porsche 914 repair manual. http://www.themotorbookstore.com/914.html

I always suggest...

Haynes manual
914 914/6 handbook
Tech tips 700

And if you're looking for a fun and informative read get " How to keep your volkswagen alive".

Before this "Internet thing" even existed, I rebuilt my entire engine with nothing but the Haynes manual.

Now you have things like this forum & http://bowlsby.net/914/Classic/

Like Stugray, I started long ago with only the Haynes manual. You should probably get it first. It has some errors, so read it with a grain of salt. I have the 914 914/6 manual also, but I think Haynes is better.

The 914World site is a tremendous resource. There is also a lot of good stuff on the Bird site:

The Clymer manual (since republished by Lash International) is a reasonable one. It has some coverage of the Six, which is kind of nice. It has slightly different takes on a few procedures than Haynes, which can occasionally be useful.

I don't really use mine, though. The Haynes is my primary manual, or the factory manuals. Note that most of what is in Haynes is a word-for-word copy of what's in the Factory manuals, and they used a lot of the same pictures.
