Doing a complete paint job. Should I preserve the original sticker or replace? Where should I get the replacement?

Doing a complete paint job. Should I preserve the original sticker or replace? Where should I get the replacement? Tony; try to preserve if possible. Difficult due to cutouts, but can be done. Replacements are available but Len and I were really pleased with the ones from the outfit in Poland that include the perforations and semi circle cutouts. Don’t have the info at my fingertips but will post later today with pics. |

If that sticker is perfect I would try to preserve it. If it is already damaged, I would remove and replace it. There are nice replacements available. I have only seen a very few where the car was repainted and the sticker preserved and it was not obviously a repaint. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Was facing same issue……Car-bone (Poland) produces great product ( no experience with Aase)…….Easy to do business with…..
Possible that Sierra Madre does as well. Make sure to tell them background color (silver or black) |

Yep; Carbone. Very happy with result. Went in with Len as he didn’t have one; saved on mailing cost by ordering both at same time. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) On my 73, the door jamb sticker was removed in 2000 during the repaint. I got one from Carbone last summer. It is excellent. First time in 22 years its had a door jamb sticker. |

I replaced the orginal because of replacing the jamb placement with a Carbone replacement, then kept the cut-out rectangle of the sticker for posterity. I keep it in the glovebox. Carbone did a great job. Not sure but my guess is that they make them to order for Aase as I've seen both.

Thanks. I think I’ll keep the original. I could always replace it later.

+1 for carbone. The stickers are purposely impossible to remove without damaging them and I don't see how you can mask the sticker and repaint without it being obvious you did so. The carbone stickers are an exact match.

I have tried in the past to remove them without much luck. Does anyone have a good method for removing it intact? I have carbone replacements that are very good but would like to save the original if possible.

I have carbone replacements that are very good but would like to save the original if possible. I can only say what NOT to do. I thought maybe a little heat could soften the adhesive enough to slip a razor blade underneath to lift it. I turned my heat gun to the lowest setting to start and as soon as I warmed the sticker, the sticker plastic melted and curled. Between the low melting point and perforations preventing the sticker to be peeled off, it is not an easy task. BTW, I was able to successfully remove and salvage all other decals on my car but this one defeated me. |

OK, call me stupid but I tried to locate the sticker on carbone searching 914/decals& stickers. Found every damned decal & sticker except this one. I found it quickly on the AASE sight. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) if you want to be pedantic replace the VIN with one the same colour. they were either black or silver. and they did vary slightly in layout over the years. as a side discovery from 74 1.8 L jet research we found the combos of specific paint colours to Vin stickers. they were not just randomly different colours. about halfway down this page. http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?sho...7407&st=100 but its only info for 74 cars. were not looking further afield. |

Mine was silver before I toasted it in 2009. My question was where on the carbone site is this sticker located. I know where to place it in the jamb. Tia, Kent |

Tia, Kent i just had a look on carbone. i think you are correct. they would appear not to make them anymore. old links to vin page of carbone on pelican parts forums are dead links now as well. AASE appears to have the VIN labels for 911s. they have dr porsche ing. etc written on them. 914/6s might have had those types of Vins. the 4s have VW written on them. AA appears to have the correct ones for the 4s. not sure if they have the little circles etc or how close a copy they are. http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-parts/a...LS-AND-STICKERS what year is yours? the typography does vary very slightly if you are super fussy. somewhere here there was a thread about them a little while back. with some of the variations. |

Like @Cairo94507 said, they'll have you send a pic of your old oe so they can do an exact match. Then they will send an electronic proof to approve. Check to make sure the tamper proof stamping is visible in the proof if you want the perfect match. It wasn't showing on my first proof but they quickly fixed it. Whenever I get a replica decal, I hold it side by side with the original if possible and search until I find a flaw. I couldn't find a flaw on the carbone VIN sticker. That was the only time I couldn't. |
