Yeah, all was going well - both output shaft seals went in without a hitch, eazy-peazy. Installed a brass (bronze?) bushing at the shifter console too. Then I manage to drop the old input shaft seal INTO the freakin' case, trying to get a screwdriver to pierce the seal. I had previously tried to drill the seal for a sheetmetal screw but the bit was too short to reach because of the drill's bulky battery section. So, it's FAIL ARMY for me on this one (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
Anyway.. what are the options now - full tear down? Can one of the side plate's come off and allow access for old seal retrieval? Tie it to my boat so I don't drift down current? |

Assuming you just punched the seal into the differential cavity; you can remove the side cover to the differential.
Beware: the side cover is sealed with a large o-ring. Plan on replacing that. Adding gasket material or RTV under the cover could affect ring and pinion mesh. Just plan ahead and replace the O-ring gasket. I’d also have at least one output shaft seal on hand - just incase you damage one of those while removing the diff. |

Only God knows.
Once the side cover is off I’d bet you can fish it out one way or another. |

If you can fish it out with a soft metal, I used a coat hanger, didn’t damage the shaft at all, I believe it is hardened. Maybe a length of mig wire? Wasn’t easy needed a lot of pulling. Good luck. |

I did as @Superhawk996 suggested and popped the cover off of the diff area (thanks for the encouragement).. that's the seal at the end of my screwdriver

And a shot after I cut the seal off of the input shaft.
So now we know - if any other doofus does what I did trying to get the seal out, it can be accessed by removing the diff cover. Large O-ring ordered! Attached image(s) |

Accidentally pushed mine into the case, never bothered to remove it, just added a new seal. It can't go anywhere, it'll just catch a ride on the shaft until the next time someone opens up the case. Which you did, but i did not. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/bye1.gif) |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) glad you got it easily.
I couldn’t remember off the top of my head whether the input shaft crossed in front of or behind the ring gear and whether you would have to remove the differential. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif) |

A simple job that turned into a real pain in the ass! As someone that’s recently assembled an entire car, that seems to be the theme with a 914. True enough. I guess we get to enjoy it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) |
