Almost bought an SP2 a few times. Warning, they are insanely slow.
Sure look cool though. |

Warning, they are insanely slow. Well, yeah! They are a bus with a sports car body. Don't get me wrong, they look awesome in that late 70s fastback sportscar way. But the engine was just a run of the mill bus plant - not even the 914 motors. Just plain Jane 60Hp 1.7 / 411 motors. Actually, I'm a little wrong - they were DETUNED bus and 411 motors. The Bus and 411 at the time were using fuel injection. The SP2 used duel solex carbs. I still want one though. Zach |

My car was a 80hp wonder in the original form, then 100hp, soon to be 230hp....anything is possible.
Cool car, maybe when they were 5-7k cars, but at that price.....no thanks. |

Pretty sure that's a type 3 motor, check the heat exchangers in the following picture.
Spent a lot of time working on Squarebacks in my younger years. Yea would be neat to buy, but not $50k 'neat'... |

There is an active and popular Volkswagen club here, the Rose City Volksters. One of their members lives a few miles from me and he just acquired an SP2 recently. He did an engine rebuild (no, I don't know the details) and cleaned it up nicely. I had never known about these cars. I agree that they are a cool, unique look. I stopped by his house one day as he was working on the motor. I like the car.

In their home market, Brazil, a standard joke about these cars (SP1 and SP2) was that the SP stood for "Sim Potenza"--"without power".

I think it would be a good candidate for a really stout T4!
