I'll sometimes use a skinnier rod/screwdriver to act as a guide before I try to install the pins.
I'll get it skewered up like a shish kabob first on all springs. Phillips work best for me, pointy ends and all... |

First, always wear eye protection
Use a Phillips screwdriver on one end and hold the spring with a pair of vice grips. Get the spring set in place with the vice grips and then replace the screwdriver with the pin. Takes minutes when you get it right. |
