"Oh you like cars? Want a project?"
. . . and so it begins
Sitting in a sort of covered shed for 28 years in North Idaho.
1.8 Motor is locked solid. The starter did try. We also tried to drag it in 5th gear.
Front calipers are locked.
Rust in the usual places, but the rust does not seem as bad as many I have seen.
Floors are solid.
All the rubber seals seem to be perished.
~30 years old KYB Struts!

We will be tearing it completely down. Fixing the body and then putting it back together one system at a time.

Please bare with me as I ask stupid questions.

Got to love it " sort of covered shed"

Looks as though you have booked yourself for the next year or so. Other than that she looks promising. We will help you through the in's and out's of this example

@spencerhut

i'm going to want to ask you some questions on the car if you have time.
for our L-Jet research project. we have been compiling quite a bit of data on the 1.8 L jets.

in the meantime - hopefully another little 74 1.8 will be back on the roads in your hands.

I never understood this sort of thing.
(IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

The engine might have been salvageable if you had taken it out and split the case.
Now it is for certain ruined and needs a complete rebuild (or be tossed out).

Anyways, good luck with your project. We've all been there, some more than once.

Mine was in similar condition when I drug it home. Time, patience and a little cabbage….
Many experienced members of this group (including yours truly) that have been in your shoes that are willing to help.

Pull the plugs, add some rust penetrating oil of your choice. After a few days rock the car back and forth in second gear.

Yeah, we did that. Gave it week of pulling the plugs everyday and spraying each cylinder.
Then we tugged it with the Ranger in 5th on dirt. Wheels were still locked after ~3ft so we left it at that and will pull the motor.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) , yes most of us here should be committed for getting ourselves into this sort of thing. Extra blessings to our wives for putting up with this nonsense. Even if you could loosen the engine, it's doubtful the rings would ever seal against the cylinder walls or piston lands.

The good news is that road salt wasn’t used much in PNW during the time 914’s were most likely to be on the road. Hopefully it was a local car and not an east coaster.

Looks like trunk hinges have failed based on looks in photo?

As others have said, keep pictures coming and you’ll find the help you may need here.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) horizontally opposed engines have a terrible propensity to collect condensation and corrosion on the bottoms of cylinders resulting in severe pitting and seizure as you’ve experienced.

Hey Ian! I have watched most of your 914 video's and will be referencing them on several of my repairs.
Thank you soo much for making those video's! You did the 914 community a real solid favor, probably helped save a bunch of these cars.

Thank you,

Spencer

I'm a decent welder. And I have plenty of other projects to turn to if this one tries my patience.
pull the rockers and post what I find.
