Went through a number of posts to try to sort why my new floor mat on the passenger side is too long. It's a 73 so it does have that wedge I suppose. I have not pulled off the carpet yet, but if I do, and then ideally pop it out, will the carpet now not go back correctly? Leave gaps? I can't tell from the photos I found in other posts.

I took a co-worker for a ride in the car, he wanted to see what all
the hubbub was about. So did a few corners and demonstrated the brakes, and submarined him into the footwell. Might be nice to have it there, if it came with it

The early cars had a small wedge, basically makes the firewall flat. Then it used the 'foot rest' for passenger bracing.

I'd just roll the floor mat up either at the front or under the seat. The bigger/later wedge is useful as a passenger.

Do you have the right year carpet kit? If so, make sure it’s fitted correctly, has the foam wedge and with spray adhesive in place or cut and modify the carpet to fit. If you don’t want to modify the carpet yourself, make a template and take it and the carpet piece to an upholstery shop.

Yeah it was a Do it again Daddy! moment. I looked over and he had wiggled his way back into the seat, he had a death grip on the doors grab handle, he's looking forward with a big grin on his face and he anounces that "I'm Ready!"

Others have said, it's two different carpet pieces, one early and one later for pre and post foot wedge.

I guess if you have the wedge in and the carpet piece is too long, could be for an early 914?

Have a pic or two you can post?

You can use the early kit (longer) lay the carpet down, the others will cover with foam block installed, if you remove it's still covered.
