I saw VIN 4732922506 on at Junkyard Barbie in Morrisville PA on 4/13/2015. I added the VIN. You cannot buy a whole car there. I've asked. I took a repop LE spoiler ($5) and all of the locks and door handles.

I was cleaning out my inbox and I has an old PM that said the VIN plates and title were for sale on FB.

Are problems like this something we should care about?

I don't know. It's something I would never do. I'm too old to go to jail.

Couple things that indicate "old cars" have become "collectibles":

- People asking about NOS parts "only" because aftermarket ain't good enough for their restoration, and;
- VIN plates and titles for sale.

Ship of Theseus, and all that.

Best you can do is put it in the DB with a note that she was discovered destroyed at a junkyard. After that, "caveat emptor". - GA

Crazy world. Who would ever think VIN and title from a /4 would be for sale?

Always some lowlife looking to make a buck.

As stated - buyer beware. Even the /4’s are now becoming scam worthy.

Customers ask for "illegal" things more often than you might imagine.

Can you remove the check engine light bulb?

Can you gut my plugged catalytic converter?

I always answer YES! (for a price)

The price for a Federal Felony is 250,000.

They always balk and I ask them "How much is a year in Federal worth to you?"

And then I give them an estimate to correctly repair the car...


The ONLY good way to combat this type of shenanigans is a database EXACTLY like we have here!

Those who maintain this database do not get as much credit as they deserve.

I should use that when I sell my mustang. It's the last and only fuel injected year without a CEL. This car is worth 250000 dollars!!!!

It sometimes happens when someone buys a car without a title or looses the title and they live in a state without a way to get a replacement title.
So am I saying I would advocate a vin swap - no
Would I do something to save a car so I can keep it in the family and enjoy it - yes.

I would NOT post that info on an open website.

And I wouldn't sell it to anyone but a family member with full disclosure.

I did have a cat die on an Odyssey. The second O2 sensor actually mounts into the cat body and has a section of honeycomb before the sensor (which is HOW the OBD2 determines if the cat is bad.)

The section past this sensor disintegrated and plugged up the muffler. Car would not go faster that 15 MPH.

I replaced the muffler, inspected the cat, re-installed it and was fine for 18 months.
No CEL at all.

The transmission took a dump which turned the vehicle into an organ doner and solved my emissions issue.

Now, I didn't gut the cat, it did it itself. There are NO laws that specifically say you SHALL repair your emissions systems.

There are MANY laws that state you cannot register your car if the OBD sees a problem.

In the case of the Oddy, the car didn't see shit.


Latest round of inspection BS down here in Texas...

If you live 1 county away from a non-attainment county there will NO LONGER be any inspections at all, on any year car.

In the sticks, they have been doing "safety" inspections for the last 10 years.
This checks tires/lights/brakes/lug nuts/wiper blades/safety shit.
It's supposed to include a visual check of emission devices (cat/O2 sensors, egr valve) but no one ever did.
The inspection takes 10-15 minutes and the State fixed the price at $7...

You have to dedicate one bay of your shop for "Inspections only" and the ONLY way shops made any money off of it was to sell related work (sometimes fictitious work!).

No one wants to do them any more.


State said "No more" after 1/1/25 but.

They increased the price of registration exactly 7 dollars....

I believe in safety inspections! They should be $20-25 to make them more profitable to the shops that will put up with inspections.

In 40+ years of active automotive wrenching the ONLY folks I've ever seen incarcerated are State Inspectors.

The scuzziest dealers get away with murder, but the poor State inspector gets rail-roaded.

Being a "State Inspection Station" gives the DPS the right to enter the shop at any time and full access to your books.

Early on I decided to NEVER be a State Inspector...

I'm not advocated selling a vin, even to a family member.

My first 914, which I still own, Is a vin swap car. I didn't do it. I didn't even know about it until I brought it into a shop for a restoration. I bought it when I was 16 and long before I knew about early/late bodies and all the details. I'm fixing it up again for me to enjoy. I'll never sell it, just drive it until I wear it out or whatever.

It's not legal to vin swap but there sure are a lot of high end cars that get sent overseas, rebodied (legal in many countries) and then returned to the states. It's not worth doing to a 914 but I know of one 911RS that's currently for sale as a rebodied car.
