I hope the title caught you off guard! It’s as in anal retentive /OCD behaviors. I just finished spending the better part of an hour digging old, hardened grease out of the crevices of a wiper motor that no one will ever see! Am I alone in this type of insane behavior, or is there a support group?

I’ve been on the board for some time and have purchased parts from several members, but have not been a very active poster. This is to serve as official notification of my efforts at a complete ‘nut and bolt’ restoration of my 1973 Marathon Blue 2 liter. I’ve had the car for approximately 5 years, but am just getting started on it in earnest. COVID followed by a two year saga trying to get a garage built! (Thank you Massachusetts!) Here’s a photo of the car shortly after I got it.Attached Image

Hope to use this opportunity to put some self imposed pressure on myself to maintain momentum.

Looks great, but I always liked Marathon Blue

Is she running driving?

Was when I bought it, but I’m currently in the process of a complete resto.

Looks like a nice clean car to start with!

So much easier when it is...

Pretty Fuchs on that one!

Mine are old and slightly "tan".

And YES, by the time most of us are done the car is cleaner than when it was delivered!

I describe myself as an Anal-Retentive Bitch!

I like to hit "as delivered or better".

My wife says it's easy to spot where I've been at it...

Anyplace that looks "new" on an old car is a dead give away!

Show us some "ripped apart" shots!

The overall pics are nice, but you will be surprised at the level of detail that other members will notice in the "in progress stuff".

If you ask questions sometimes the question will not actually be answered BUT others will post stuff that is AWESOMELY Valuable!

Always, you get what you need!

I believe it would be a mistake to restore one of these WITHOUT using this forum and the members as one of the MAIN references.

I've had members make stuff "happen" (FOR FREE!) for me and I've returned the favors to others.
Lots of the members make stuff too, the quality level has been EXCELLENT in the items I've purchased.

This place is far more like a mechanic's "shop" than other forums I've joined.

We're a bunch of old gearheads and will welcome other gearheads with open arms!

Nice looking 914 to begin with. That is going to really be nice when you go through it and do what you do. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Thanks. Fortunately, it was in pretty good condition when I got it. A little tired, but very little rust. Looks better in the pictures than it was. If it turns out half as nice as your car, I’ll be ecstatic! Your build was / is an inspiration. 914_7T3 is another build that is inspirational (and a twin of my car). If this one comes out like I hope, I may have to look for a -6 to do. Funny back story: I had a 1973 914 1.7 in marathon blue when my wife and I met 38 years ago. We went on our first date in that car. When I saw this car for sale, I thought that it might spark some memories. When it arrived, I asked my wife if she remembered the car. Her reply: “No, not really”. I told her that it was the same year and color of the car that I had when we met. “Really?” So much for nostalgia!

Nice car! I put Pedrinis on my very first 914 when I was 17. It was signal orange. Clapped out, but I loved it. My first Porsche.

Welcome to the insanity. If you tend towards OCD, aka perfectionism, have you already allowed yourself to plan a complete, everything apart to the last nut and bolt, totally bare body shell rebuild?

If so, how old are you--how many good years do you have left? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Happy to help, or hang out - dropping the 914-6 engine this winter for fuel line replacement and engine bay de-grease.

My favorite blue color is Marathon probably because I had a brand new 73 marathon blue bug I bought when I was 21 my first new car. As far as the OCD goes, I know the feeling but when you build a car to that level like my 6, you are scared to take it out anywhere for fear of getting smallest little imperfections because once it's perfect you can only go downhill from there, but you know that

your 73 bug was a "sun bug" I remember them.

My first 914 project was (is) Marathon Blue, but is far down the line in resto order.

Bob, maybe you should get a beater to take to the corner store? I sold a nice original 356SC a couple years ago just for that reason, never wanted to take her out.

A warm welcome to the OP, let us know how can be of assistance
