Here are some pics of Vin# 4072 the 4th to the last 914 built. So we now know who has the 4th 914/6 built (Brad) and Kent Carlson who has this one.
Note the wrong turn signal lenses and lack of rollbar vinyl.
Now to find the last one made!

Geoff

All 76 cars came with the Euro lens front and rear to meet the new US requirements.
Thats how you can spot a 76 vs a 75 from a distance unless the 75 car has installed them.
I wonder if this car came with the sail vinyl and it was removed due to a repaint? All the other late vin cars I have heard of came with ALL the options and goodies as Porsche was asking top dollar due to the demand, "Get one of the last 914's made" sales hype.

Say wha????

What have you surmised about the very last 914s Geoff...what unusual details do you know?

I thought I recall that they were supposedly loaded with factory 'options'...

The missing Targa vinyl is a big surprise to me, other sources say that from 74-on, all USA 914s had vinyl standard.

By any chance did Kent also give you the chassis number off the paint code plate or drivers door sticker date? I have been curious to know what month they were actually done producing 914s. Any chance it was a late 1975 date?

That doesnt make sense...the white light in front would violate US laws even today...Is that in print somewheres?

Not necessarily. The VIN was only the last number assigned3 to the car after it passed inspections. My LE website shows several LE cars where a car with an earlier VIN was built on a later date than a car with a later VIN. You have to look at the chassis plate on the front drivers door to know the date that a car began production...which to my way of seeing it would mean the last car off the assembly line.

I think there is a 76 car in one of the history books with white late style bumpers...anyone know anything about that car? I think it might have been the very last one...

Jeff,
My date code is 12/75 and I know for a fact that they sold them into the fall of 76. Why? I test drove a 76 914 at the Seattle Porsche Dealer in the fall of 76, an orange one too. Had the ugly pinstriping that my car has too! I have always wondered if this was the same car that I have now because of that. Nahh, couldn't be.

I have seen several early 76 cars that didn't have the sail vinyl or in fact were pretty basic cars probably to keep the sales price down as they were going for $7500.
I have heard that once people realized that 914's were going out of production that they were pretty hot sellers. Dealers were screaming for cars with all the options on them so they could jack the price up for more profit. A Manhatten Dealer even had a auction for one of their last 914's which sold for a much higher price than the Dealer list. (this is from my friend who worked for Porsche/Audi at the time.)
I have not seen or talked to anyone else who has a 914 vin in the 4000's so I don't know any other details other than what you might also have read other than what my friend has told me.

Mine came with Euro's front and rear so there!

The only thing modified on the car was the 40 Dells.
Came with:
LE spoiler
Pinstriping
Fogs
Bumpers tits
Remote trunk lock and rear reflector (nice and rusty under it too)
Rear window defogger
Tinted glass
Sway bars
Fuchs
Tan interior
center console
Very little rust
Tons of pine needles in every nook and cranny too

Mine too, and I mean tons! I thought they were added by the PO. I didn't know they were from the factory. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) Were they just in the '76's?
