Are these hole needed for anything. or can I get them welded up to make the trunk water tight?

those holes get plastic plugs. do you need some? don't bother welding them up.

Normally they are plugged with plastic caps so I don't see any reason that you can't weld them shut unless you are planning on installing a front oil cooler.
Or you could ask around and see if someone has some plastics plugs laying around. I might have a few in a parts car if you want them. |

My first 914 had the cable break to the front trunk latch. That was really no fun trying to open the hood with a crowbar. I ended up with a crooked hood with dimples and a ruined bumper pad and seals.
I noticed looking in the Haynes that as well as access for welding, these holes allow a way to get to the cable and hood hinge. It won't be easy, but if youv'e ever had that happen, you definately want a way to get into the trunk. Leave at least a couple open and plug with rubber caps. Huff |

I have 8 of them you can have. With the 1 you already have that'll fill all of the holes.

There is a 5/16" hole right by the front latch to open it with a screwdriver if the cable breaks. You just have to have the bumper off to access it. |
