What's this? I'm assuming he means LE. What do you think? Real or no?

5-lug Bumblebee

Well, I just bid on it. If I get it for $950 I don't care if it's original or not !!!

Heh..heh...the wife will be so happy if I bring another one home.

Too bad CARFAX is no good on pre-81 vehicles!!!!

It looks like it might be...

The VIN listed is in the correct LE VIN range. I have contacted the seller for more details.

Sorry to burst your bubble but there is a reserve price on the car. You'll have to match or better that reserve price before it will sell. I suspect it's close to $5000 because that is near his buy it now price. You could always ask him what his reserve is set at and he may, or may not, tell you.

The only draw back to this car is that the left rear wheel had come lose and damaged the fender. The repair work is fair. With a little body work rhis car would be perfect.

Interesting that he says the car is damaged on the left side but only includes a picture of the right side in the auction.

This seems to be a special car guys.

The seller Rob Baylor, has given me the date code...if it is an LE and I am pretty sure it is, this car has the earliest date code of any LE found to date. He has no COA for the car which would tell for certain.

All LEs seem to have been built between the 7th and the 14th week of 1974. The earliest known LE to date has been dated to the Tuesday of the 7th week. This car began production on the Monday of the 7th week, perhaps the very first day of 914 LE production(?)...it was the 41st car begun that day.

The seller seems very congenial and wants the car to go to someone who will appreciate it more.

Prolly not the First LE...there were 40 other 914s started that day before this car...but the earliest LE located to date.

He said he would send photos tommorrow...I will post them then...

Ahem...he also sold an LE to someone local to him with a VIN just 2 digits apart from this one...it has a window sticker and he will try to find that info too... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Thanks for the info Bowlsby! This is turning out to be a cool story. Wouldn't it be nice to find out where the other one is... Was the other one possibly the same as this one but with GREEN trim? Like GRASSHOPPER GREEN? Probably not.....

Also, if someone buys it and restores it we will see the first "reverse 5-lug conversion" I have ever heard of.

It would be nice if it didnt have the crest on the hood.
There is at least on hole in the car that wasnt supposed to be there. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

What is the best website to find information on engine year/make model/number and/or body information as well? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pray.gif)

That’s true…mostly.

The Euro 914GTs (what was to be the LE for Europe but was never produced beyond prototype) had Targa bar vinyl. The factory put vinyl on its Euro 914GTs to set it apart from the standard 914s which did not have it…and the opposite was true for the USA, for the same rationale.

There is one LE on my website (VIN 15605 on the Registry) with Targa bar vinyl, but it must have been added later by a PO. 15605 even has a COA which does not list the vinyl as optional equipment…so it was not installed at the factory.

This current Bumblebee on eBay must have had the vinyl added later too. This is a very early LE though…it is always possible that the vinyl came on this car before the production line figured out what it was doing.
