Hey all
My name is mike, I’ve been a member of 914world (914club) since march 2005 when my son Kenny (a.k.a. orange914) bought his first 914. at present he owns an early 1973 that is a keeper. This is why I’m researching this particular 914 From what I’ve learned the first 1000 1973 914’s were slated for the European market but sent to the U.S. due to early 73 demand. They have some unique features that I’m attempting to research. I contacted a few members earlier on this but had my computer crash and lost all info. If you have ANY info. On this car or have noticed any oddities drop a line. Please e-mail me Thanks, mike (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) 209-537-3749 My e-mail address is: orange914@yahoo.com |

So that's why the early ones don't have the door beams I guess?

I see your car has the vinyl on the windshield pillars, that is different.

I've got a late '73 with the door beams. I noticced you said in one of the other posts that the late doors have 200# of reinforcing in them. I don't agree with you there. I've handed both early and late doors and cut the beams out of a set of late doors and there is not 200 pounds more steel in late doors. Maybe there is 25 pounds per door at the most. I don't mean to nit pick but wanted to let you know.

these early cars through serial number about 1100 what were 1.7 models had just a few unique features. They were: Early model doors without side beams, early model window regulator mechanisms, and black vinyl around the windshield frame to make the car look like a vinyl topped car of the early 70's.

You of course have the best of both worlds. Light doors late model mechanisms. |

I have 4732907132,
also has early doors with late mechanism Car is in Canada now but was told it was bought in Germany I have repair receipts from very early mileage showing work performed on the car in Germany. Car was then owned by a doctor stationed in a Canadian armed forces camp. I wonder when they made the switch from early to reinforced doors ??? Might be a Canadian thing.
Steph, how's your car coming along? So far I've got the frames all done, new floor in and am just waiting for a new section for under the pedal cluster to finish the floors, then I can start the body work and flares. |

Anyone ever found out ??? BTW, Doug Seems like you're working much faster than I am, Work here is crazy, I have one tech in training and another that's been retired for the past 10 years but is still coming in and getting paid... So it makes me the only WORKING tech to take care of the whole distribution system. Oh well at least the car is in the heat and secured. I did some work on it but still a bit to do. It's on it's wheels and bodywork is 3/4 done. Hope to paint in summer! Take care, Steph |
